Okay, so I just heard from Tom Rothman at Sony that the new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, won’t have the Statue of Liberty in it. Apparently, the last film got rejected in China because of Lady Liberty, and they’re avoiding that problem this time around. It’s a little disappointing, but I get it – they want to make sure as many people as possible can see the movie!
According to Rothman, Spider-Man: No Way Home would have earned over $2 billion globally if it hadn’t been blocked from release in China, which he believes prevented it from reaching that milestone.
In an interview on YouTube’s The Town with Matt Belloni, Sony’s Tom Rothman revealed that Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $1.9 billion worldwide despite not being released in China.
Rothman says Chinese officials informed Sony that the movie could be distributed in China if they cut out the Statue of Liberty.
The main issue was that the Statue of Liberty is the dramatic high point of the film, and Marvel had already used it as a meaningful tribute to Captain America.

China Wanted The Statue Of Liberty Removed
Rothman explained that Chinese regulators said, “No problem. Just cut out the Statue of Liberty.”
The last 20 minutes of the movie feature the climactic battle between the three Spider-Men and their enemies.
Matt Belloni simply stated the clear solution: remove the ending. Josh Rothman concurred, explaining it was yet another reason he wouldn’t approve the changes.
Rotham stated he couldn’t envision having to explain to Congress why he’d taken down the Statue of Liberty if asked by the Chinese Communist Party.
Rather than alter the film to meet requirements, Sony decided not to release it in China. Josh Rothman, a Sony executive, believes the movie would have earned over $2 billion worldwide if it had been shown there without those changes.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Drops Lady Liberty
Next up is the new Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters this summer, just a few weeks after the Fourth of July.
In the interview, Belloni playfully suggested that the upcoming movie won’t include the Statue of Liberty.
Rothman laughed and replied that’s true — and called it a “total coincidence.”

China’s Influence on Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Given the China controversy surrounding No Way Home, the comment raises eyebrows.
It appears Sony is deliberately avoiding showing the Statue of Liberty in the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. This is likely to prevent issues with Chinese censorship and ensure the film can be released there, ultimately to maximize profits.
What’s particularly interesting is that Brand New Day returns to New York City, but this time, you won’t see the Statue of Liberty or the Captain America memorial anywhere in the story.
