The Latin American voice acting community is saddened by the unexpected death of Alexis Ortega, a Mexican actor who famously provided the Spanish voice for Spider-Man. He was 38 years old. News of his passing was first reported by Beaveronline and later confirmed by colleagues and various news sources.
I was so shocked to hear about his passing. It happened on January 24th, but the news didn’t really break until a few days later. What’s really unsettling is that no one’s said what happened, and his family hasn’t made any official comment. It’s left everyone – fans and people who worked with him – completely stunned and just trying to figure out what went wrong.
I’ve been a big fan of voice acting for years, and Eugenio Derbez isn’t the only talent coming out of Mexico! Eugenio Ortega was born there on August 31, 1987, and started his professional acting career around 2013. He really worked his way up, and now, if you watch a lot of Latin American Spanish dubs like I do, you’ve almost certainly heard his voice – he’s become a really recognizable name in the industry.
Many fans will remember Jorge Ortega as the voice of Spider-Man in the Marvel movies. He dubbed the lines for Tom Holland in popular films like Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Avengers: Infinity War. To viewers throughout Latin America, his voice became strongly associated with the character’s modern portrayal.
Beyond live-action roles, Ortega also excelled in voice acting. He’s well-known for voicing Tadashi Hamada in both the movie Big Hero 6 and the follow-up series. Critics particularly appreciated how genuine and heartfelt his performances were, especially in touching scenes. He also lent his voice to popular animated films like Finding Dory and Cars 3.
Beyond voice acting, Ortega also appeared on screen. He’s particularly well-known for playing a younger Jorge “El Burro” Van Rankin in Luis Miguel: The Series, a role that demonstrated his ability to seamlessly transition between voiceover and on-camera performance.
After news of his death, people shared many heartfelt tributes online. The ALDA Awards praised Ortega and expressed their sympathy, noting his significant impact and skill in voice acting. Other actors and fans shared similar sentiments, explaining that his voice work deeply shaped the Spanish-speaking audience’s connection to many popular characters.
