In the ’90s, “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” was a popular choice for weekday afternoons, joined by “X-Men: The Animated Series” and “Batman: The Animated Series.” Unlike its counterparts, Spider-Man’s 65-episode series ended on a huge cliffhanger, with his beloved Mary Jane Watson missing in the Multiverse. With Madame Web’s assistance, he embarked on a quest to find her, but the story was never concluded. Although “X-Men ’97” hinted at their reunion, we were left wondering how it happened. Now, thanks to IGN, we know that Marvel will finally address this almost 30-year-old mystery in a new comic book series titled “Spider-Man ’94.
This limited series titled “Spider-Man ’94” continues the storyline from where the animated series’ inconclusive ending in 1998 left off. You might wonder why it isn’t named “Spider-Man ’98“, but we don’t have that information. In this comic book, Peter Parker and MJ return to New York City, and Spidey will face two famous villains from his rogues gallery who will make their debut in the ’90s Marvel animated universe for the first time. Known for co-creating “Justice League International“, comic book legend J.M. DeMatteis, who also worked on “Spider-Man: The Animated Series“, will pen all four issues. The artwork will have a ’90s aesthetic by Jim Towe, and the covers will be designed by Nick Bradshaw, Ron Lim, and John Tyler Christopher. As DeMatteis mentions, they’re treating this as if it were “the next season of the show.
Here’s the official description for Spider-Man ’94 from Marvel Comics:
After exploring the farthest reaches of the multiverse, it’s none other than Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man – the Astonishing, the Marvelous, the Radioactive Web-Slinger himself – who returns to the bustling streets of New York City with his cherished companion Mary Jane Watson by his side. However, something seems amiss: This time, one of the villains appears to be unlike the others. Get ready for the entrance of not just one but TWO formidable foes from Spider-Man’s comic book lore!
Veteran Spider-Man writer J.M. DeMatteis and promising newcomer artist Jim Towe invite you to experience the comeback you’ve eagerly anticipated for thirty years! The surprises and turns that await your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will leave you utterly astounded. Dig out those action figures, find a cozy spot on the couch as we take you back to the golden age of animated superhero television!
Which two well-known antagonists might we anticipate? One could be Sandman, as he was initially intended for the Marvel Cinematic Universe but wasn’t included in “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” due to his planned role in James Cameron’s abandoned “Spider-Man” film. Another possibility is the Jackal, who orchestrated Peter Parker’s tumultuous Clone Saga. We’ll discover the true identities of these villains when “Spider-Man ’94” #1 arrives at comic book stores on September 3.
