As a longtime Spider-Man fan who has seen the web-slinger swing through the streets of New York and battle villains from both this universe and beyond, I find myself torn about the direction “Spider-Man 4” seems to be taking.
“The next chapter in the Spider-Man saga within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is titled ‘Spider-Man 4’. Last year, it was announced that this movie is underway and Tom Holland and Zendaya will once again step into their roles as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and MJ. There have been talks since even before production started about whether the film would delve into a multiverse concept or stick to street-level tales.”
At ground level, a scenario might involve Spider-Man facing off against the Kingpin, and there’s even a possibility of Daredevil making an appearance. This concept is particularly exciting for many fans, especially since “Daredevil: Reborn” is slated as the next significant project on Disney+.
It appears there’s a new twist in the plot as recent whispers hint at it. The stories suggest that Kingpin will no longer be part of the movie, and instead, we might be going back to a Multiversal storyline. This change is rumored to stem from the arrival of Doctor Doom within the MCU, which seems to have been prompted by Majors’ dismissal.
Many fans find this choice disheartening, yet it appears logical in the grand scheme. It’s crucial to emphasize that these assumptions haven’t been officially verified; they’ve predominantly originated from tipsters, leak sources, and individuals within the studio.
It’s been established that Spider-Man has journeyed through different universes. This idea was initially hinted at in “Far From Home” through Mysterio’s fabricated narrative, and later fully explored in “No Way Home” with various versions of Spider-Man. Notably, “No Way Home” was a significant box office hit, earning $814.9 million in North America and Canada, and $1.112 billion abroad, totaling an impressive $1.927 billion globally. Given its success and positive fan response, it seems logical to carry on this trajectory, especially considering the elements that cater to fans.
One reason it’s doubtful “Spider-Man 4” will focus on street-level stories is its release schedule. It’s slated to come out between “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” which are predicted to wrap up the Multiverse saga. These movies could feature countless superheroes, alternate versions of characters, time travel, and reality-altering events. If the “Time Runs Out” storyline is true, it promises a grand finale with multiple universes at stake. Given this epic scale, it seems challenging to weave a street-level narrative seamlessly into such a climactic multiversal event.
Despite the recent movie, many fans are disillusioned. They yearn for a more earthbound tale of Spider-Man, where Peter Parker experiences hardships such as poverty, loneliness, and everyday struggles. They find the concept of the multiverse overused and lackluster, diminishing the stories’ significance. Some argue that revisiting the multiverse so swiftly after “No Way Home” could lessen its impact and charm. Essentially, there is a widespread preference for tales focusing on character development rather than intricate, multi-layered narratives.
