How does Spider-Gwen fit into Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2?
Note: Spoilers follow for Season 1.
In Season 1, you won’t see Gwen Stacy. However, based on her character’s distinctive appearance, it seems that she acquires spider-like abilities at some point.
As a passionate film enthusiast, let me share my take on the Season 1 finale: I found myself astonished to learn that Peter had decided to part ways with Norman Osborn and stepped down from his position. Intriguingly, it was Harry who took the reins, establishing a firm dedicated to nurturing young prodigies in science and technology.
I’d imagine it catches Norman off guard, seeing another web-slinger, but this time it’s not Peter Parker – it’s Spider-Woman, Spider-Gwen.
Initially, the spider that bit Peter was spotted in the first episode, scuttling into another student’s bag, most probably belonging to Gwen Stacy. This implies that the spider might have bitten her later on, setting up Gwen as Osborn’s potential replacement for Spider-Man. The artwork hints that Gwen possesses technology, possibly supplied by Osborn, much like he equipped Peter with various suits.
According to Spider-Man’s mythos, Spider-Gwen hails from an alternate reality where it was her who got bitten by the spider, not Peter Parker.
In addition, I’ve revised my assessment. I completed viewing Season 1, and if not for the interwoven socially conscious elements, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man wouldn’t have been so subpar. The Spider-Man segments are truly exceptional. The hints dropped in the final episode and the way they wrap things up and connect them is commendable. The general animation could use some improvement, but once again, the Spider-Man sequences are captivating (the battle between Spider-Man and Scorpion stands out). It would be ideal if they abandoned the didactic approach for Season 2, but given the introduction of Spider-Gwen, it appears improbable. We can only cross our fingers that the DEI funding diminishes.
