As a devoted follower of the enchanting world of anime, I must say that the anticipation for the conclusion of Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf has me practically howling with excitement! Having journeyed through the original series years ago, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as we approach the Legend of the Pagan Gods arc.

Spice and Wolf, penned by Isuna Hasekura with art by Jū Ayakura, is a Japanese light novel collection. ASCII Media Works has published 24 volumes from February 2006 onwards under their Dengeki Bunko imprint. The reboot anime series of Spice and Wolf, titled “Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf,” is nearing its final episodes. This reboot marks the 15th anniversary of the series and introduces a new storyline not present in the initial adaptation.

In a striking shift from its initial version that came out many years ago, the anime is venturing into uncharted territory, specifically, the Legend of the Pagan Gods arc, starting with Episode 20 on August 19th in Japan. To commemorate this fresh chapter, new cast members, Lynn as Elsa Schtingheim and Atsushi Abe as Evan Gyoam, have joined the crew for the upcoming episodes. In other words, the beloved anime Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf is about to embark on a new adventure!

Spice and Wolf: The Merchant and the Wise Wolf is now in its second part, airing from spring to summer in 2024. Joining the cast are Saeko Chiba as Fermi Amarti, Rikiya Koyama as Marc Cole, Kahoru Sasajima as Lant, and Akeno Watanabe as Dian Rubens. Meanwhile, Jun Fukuyama reprises his role as Kraft Lawrence, Ami Koshimnizu returns as Holo, and Mai Nakahara continues to voice Norah Arendt.

In a fantastical world inspired by European history, Spice and Wolf narrates the tale of Kraft Lawrence, a 25-year-old merchant who traverses from town to town selling goods, living modestly as he strives to amass enough wealth to establish his own store. After seven years on the road, he has honed his skills in trade. During his stay at Pasloe one evening, an ancient wolf deity named Holo, over 600 years old, is discovered within his wagon.

In my unique form, I embody a 15-year-old girl, yet there’s something distinctly canine about me – a tail and ears that whisper the essence of a wolf. For centuries, I have stood as the guardian deity of this town, bestowing bountiful harvests of wheat upon it. Lately, however, I find myself feeling detached and disenchanted. The townsfolk seem to be drifting away from my protective guidance, opting instead for their self-devised strategies to boost the yield. I am Holo, the goddess of harvest, longing for a connection that seems to have been lost amidst progress.

She is deeply offended by their failure to honor a pledge they made with her upon her arrival in the village, which was a mutual understanding about tending the soil, and by their derogatory remarks towards her as an unreliable deity due to requiring smaller yields for replenishment. Consequently, she wishes to return to her northern homeland, Yoitsu, as she feels that the villagers have abandoned her and that she has fulfilled her duty in ensuring bountiful harvests.

Holo, too, yearns to explore and witness the transformations the world has undergone during her long stay in one location. She successfully negotiates an exit from the village by striking a deal with Lawrence, who agrees to bring her along on his journey. During their travels, her insights contribute to Lawrence’s growing profits; however, her genuine character simultaneously attracts unfavorable interest from the Church.
