Spaceballs 2: The Return of Brooks, Moranis & Pullman Is Finally Here!

As a dedicated cinephile, I couldn’t help but feel my heart racing with excitement as I learned that Spaceballs is gearing up for a sequel! Over three and a half decades have passed since we last visited this humorous galaxy, yet here we are, on the brink of a new adventure. Amazon MGM Studios has officially confirmed the return of none other than Mel Brooks, reprising his iconic role as Yogurt, in the upcoming film Spaceballs 2. Mark your calendars for 2027 when we can all gather to laugh and enjoy this much-anticipated sequel together!

Brooks, Pullman, and Moranis Return

Besides Brooks, other original cast members are coming back as well. Specifically, Bill Pullman reprises his role as the valiant Lone Starr, and Rick Moranis is set to don the iconic helmet once more, stepping into the shoes of the villainous Dark Helmet – a role he hasn’t taken on in quite some time. Moranis, who took a break from acting in the late ’90s to focus on his family, has now returned, generating excitement among longtime fans.

Keke Palmer Joins the Franchise

Star Keke Palmer has signed on for an undisclosed role. After the triumph of “One of Them Days,” she’s gearing up with a packed schedule, featuring roles in Amazon’s “The Pickup” and Lionsgate’s “Good Fortune.

Josh Gad Leads Creative Team

This upcoming sequel is being overseen by director Josh Greenbaum, known for “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” with the script penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Interestingly, Gad will not only be contributing to the script but also starring in the movie. Furthermore, he’s producing it alongside Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, Mel Brooks, and Greenbaum himself.

Gad celebrated the announcement on Instagram, writing:

I was the kid who watched “Spaceballs” before seeing “Star Wars,” and I couldn’t understand why someone would attempt a dramatic remake of Mel Brooks’ masterpiece. Now, it’s an unparalleled joy for me to collaborate with Mel and this fantastic team to produce a sequel to the film that initially sparked George Lucas’ imagination.

Plot Still Under Wraps

The specifics of the plot are under wraps, but this film has playfully been referred to as “A Sequel That Isn’t Really a Sequel, Not a Reboot Either, But with Some Reboot-like Features, Part 2 of an Expanding Franchise.” A hint dropped by Brooks also makes light of the current Hollywood landscape, joking about the MCU and DCU.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t forget the unstoppable spoof that was “Spaceballs”, released back in 1987. This film took aim at classics like “Star Wars”, “Star Trek”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “Alien” and more, without being a box office juggernaut, earning only around $38 million. However, its quick wit and memorable dialogue soon turned it into a cult sensation.

Long-Awaited Follow-Up

It’s been quite some time since we’ve had a new installment. Back in 2013, Moranis proposed the idea of “Spaceballs III: The Quest for Spaceballs II“, and in 2015, Brooks hinted at his intentions to make another one titled “Spaceballs 2: The Hunt for More Funding“.

As Brooks approaches his 99th birthday, this new film could serve as a touching farewell and a possible reintroduction to the cosmic realm of the “Spaceballs” universe.
