The minds behind South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are collaborating with Kendrick Lamar on a new movie that sources say is hilariously funny.
The new musical comedy, currently called Whitney Springs, centers around a young Black man employed as a historical interpreter at a plantation attraction, where he portrays an enslaved person. However, the initial storyline may have been revised.
The movie was first planned to be released around the July 4th holiday in 2025. But after Kendrick Lamar and his manager, Dave Free, asked for significant additional filming, the release date was moved to March 20, 2026.
I’m hearing the movie might not come out when originally planned, and it sounds like Lamar potentially touring is part of the reason. But don’t worry, Paramount still intends to give it a proper theatrical release once everything is sorted out! I’m really excited to finally see it on the big screen.
Parker is directing ‘Whitney Springs,’ with the script written by Vernon Chatman. The project is being produced by Parker and Stone’s Park County, alongside Lamar and Free’s PGLang. Filming started in Pomona, California, in October 2024.
This movie delves into how the past impacts the present. It follows a young man working as a historical interpreter at a living history museum, where he uncovers a surprising connection: his white girlfriend’s family once owned slaves, potentially including his own ancestors.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone have a longstanding relationship with Eric Cartman, who has been involved with South Park since 2001 and is the voice of the popular character Towelie. This new project is the first time Parker, Stone, Kendrick Lamar, and Dave Free have collaborated on a film, though they did work together in 2022 on Lamar’s song The Heart Part 5, where they used their studio, Deep Voodoo, to create realistic deepfake visuals.
Deadline Hollywood first reported on the movie in January 2022. Paramount Pictures’ CEO, Brian Robbins, loved the script, calling it one of the funniest and most original he’d ever seen. Parker became the official director by March 2023. Although they initially planned to start filming in spring 2022, production was pushed back due to Parker and Stone’s work on South Park, and finally began in October 2024.
Whitney Springs is set to be released in the United States by Paramount Pictures.
