Sophie Turner Reveals ‘Tomb Raider’ Training Uncovered a Serious Health Problem

Sophie Turner is getting ready to play Lara Croft, and her training for the role revealed something surprising.

Sophie, 29, recently revealed on The Julia Cunningham Show that she was diagnosed with a chronic back problem while getting in shape for the new Tomb Raider TV series. She described the training as incredibly intense and physically challenging.

She explained that they’ve been training for eight hours a day, five days a week, since February of last year, adding, “It’s been a lot of work.”

You know, as I was really getting into shape, pushing myself with workouts, I started realizing I’ve got this ongoing back issue – I always called it a ‘perpetual back problem,’ it just wouldn’t go away, especially when I was training. But honestly, going through all that really taught me a ton about my body and what it takes to get fit.

She confessed she wasn’t very experienced with exercise when she first got the part. She explained, “I actually discovered it’s easier to build muscle if you’re completely new to working out, and I definitely was!” She added that getting in shape had taken “months and months and months” of effort.

Julia Cunningham noted that some viewers might be surprised, given Sophie Turner’s fame for playing Sansa Stark in the action-packed series Game of Thrones. Turner was quick to explain what her role actually involved.

She explained that she’d always been the one getting hurt, not the one doing the hurting. So, she was happy to finally learn how to defend herself and fight back!

Amazon MGM is creating a new Tomb Raider series starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The show will draw inspiration from the original Tomb Raider games released in 1996, the ones that made Lara Croft a gaming icon.

Amazon MGM has shared the first images of Sophie as Lara Croft, showcasing her iconic look. The costume features familiar details from the original games, including red sunglasses, a teal tank top, short shorts, gun holsters, and a leather backpack.

While the story is still largely a secret, Prime Video recently announced some of the actors who will be in the series, giving us a few hints about the plot. Sigourney Weaver will play Evelyn Wallis, a mysterious and ambitious woman who wants to use Lara Croft’s skills to her advantage. We’ll also see familiar faces from the games, like Winston the butler (Bill Paterson), Lara’s uncle Atlas DeMornay (Jason Isaacs), and her tech expert friend, Zip (Martin Bobb-Semple).

Sophie is the third actress to portray Lara Croft in a live-action movie. Angelina Jolie first played the iconic character in the early 2000s, and Alicia Vikander took on the role in 2018.

Despite a demanding training regimen and some health hurdles, Sophie is completely dedicated to the part. While getting ready to reprise the role of Lara Croft, she’s not only getting stronger and more skilled, but also learning a lot about what she’s capable of.
