Sophie Turner Debuts as Lara Croft in First Look at Live-Action ‘Tomb Raider’ Series

Amazon MGM Studios has revealed the first images of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider series. Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series—coming to Prime Video—is now in production. Turner, famous for her work on Game of Thrones, appears to be portraying the classic Lara Croft look from the video games.

The photo shows the actress wearing Lara Croft’s iconic outfit from the first Tomb Raider game, with a few updates from the second game. She’s wearing a teal tank top, shorts, a leather backpack, and red sunglasses, completing the look of the adventurous archaeologist. While details about the series’ story are still secret, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s version promises to explore Croft’s world in fresh and exciting ways.

I’m so excited about the cast they’ve assembled for this series! Of course, there’s the lead, but they’ve also added some incredible actors. Sigourney Weaver, who’s been nominated for an Oscar three times, is playing a brand new character named Evelyn Wallis – she sounds really intriguing and ambitious. And Jason Isaacs, who I loved in Harry Potter and White Lotus, is going to be Lara Croft’s uncle, Atlas DeMornay. They’ve also cast Martin Bobb-Semple as Zip, who’s apparently Lara’s tech-savvy friend – that’s a great addition!

Viewers familiar with the games will spot Bill Paterson, who plays Croft’s butler Winston, and Celia Imrie as Francine, the fundraising head at the British Museum. A recent announcement describes Francine as being completely dedicated to securing donations and enjoying champagne.

As a huge Tomb Raider fan, I was so excited to hear about the new movie! It’s cool that Millie Turner is taking on the role of Lara Croft, following in the footsteps of amazing actresses like Angelina Jolie, who I grew up watching, and Alicia Vikander. It was a bit of a shock when Alicia wasn’t going to return for a sequel, especially since she and the writer, Misha Green, were really eager to make it happen. Apparently, after Amazon bought MGM, things got complicated. Alicia even told Entertainment Weekly in 2022 that it was all out of her hands, and it really came down to ‘politics’ after the buyout. It’s a shame, because she and Misha were prepared to go, but it seemed like the decision wasn’t up to them anymore.

Joining the cast are Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, and August Wittgenstein. The show doesn’t have a release date yet.

Okay, I’ve seen the first official photo of Millie Turner as Lara Croft, and wow, she nails that adventurous vibe! Everyone online is already buzzing, and it looks like the show is going to really capture the feel of the original games while also adding some new stories and characters. It’s awesome to see them respecting the classic look but also trying to build out the Tomb Raider world in a cool way.
