According to a report by Reuters, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has taken legal action against Tencent, alleging that the game Light of Motiram infringes upon Sony’s intellectual property rights by imitating its own Horizon series.
In simpler terms, Sony is requesting the court to halt the release of Light of Motiram and potentially award them money, as they argue that Light of Motiram closely resembles their game Horizon without proper credit or authorization.
Besides the apparent similarities between Light of Motiram and Horizon that are noticeable to most, an intriguing point presented by Sony strengthens this comparison: In March 2024, Tencent proposed a Horizon game to Sony, but Sony turned down the offer. Interestingly, according to Sony’s information, development on Light of Motiram had already been underway for a year at that time.
If these sequential occurrences are accurate, it might suggest that Tencent had been working on their version of Horizon since the beginning, even after Sony rejected a licensing agreement. Consequently, challenging this development becomes quite problematic.
Simultaneously, there were no apparent issues with the game when Sony first announced it, and they even took to their Chinese social media platforms to advertise it as a forthcoming PS5 title.
In the legal dispute, Sony asserts that various aspects such as plot structure, game mechanics, cultural elements, character designs, artistic style, landscape depictions, architectural and artistic details, color schemes, typography, and symbols found in their game are remarkably similar to those seen in the Horizon series. They claim this similarity is not a coincidence but rather suspicious. Furthermore, they point out that the use of lightning and camera angles also appear strikingly similar.
Regarding the musical aspect of their productions, Sony claims that the resemblances found in “particular melodies, tones, beats, and composition” are intentional, as a composer previously engaged in the creation of Horizon Forbidden West has been employed by Tencent.
According to Sony’s statement, there were casual talks between them and Tencent earlier this year aimed at resolving an issue. During these discussions, Tencent attempted to negotiate a licensing agreement, which Sony declined. Despite Sony’s refusal, Tencent chose to proceed with the development of Light of Motiram independently.
