The popular Peanuts comic strip is a surprisingly valuable property. Sony Pictures and Sony Music have recently become majority owners of the franchise in a deal worth a staggering $457 million. They acquired Peanuts from Wild Brain, a media company based in Canada.
The family of Charles Schulz, who created the Peanuts comic strip, will continue to receive 20% of the franchise’s earnings. Even decades after introducing characters like Charlie Brown and Snoopy, the charming world of Peanuts is still popular and continues to reach new generations with new animated specials.
Beyond the new shows and specials on Apple TV, the Peanuts franchise also includes a lot of branded products and theme park attractions. The fact that Sony paid $457 million for it shows just how valuable Peanuts is. It will be interesting to see what new developments come next.
