Sony Reportedly Could Have Featured SPIDER-MAN In Its Own Live-Action Marvel Films But…Didn’t

As a seasoned gamer and avid Marvel fan who’s spent countless hours navigating the intricate worlds of comic books, movies, and video games, I can’t help but weigh in on this fascinating topic. The decision Sony made regarding Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was, in my opinion, both strategic and cautious.

It’s expected that “Kraven the Hunter” will mark the end of Sony’s standalone Spider-Man films featuring other characters besides Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, this doesn’t mean Sony is finished producing Marvel movies altogether. According to recent reports, Sony intends to continue creating big-screen superhero flicks. The challenges faced in their cinematic universe so far might have been due to the conscious decision not to include Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, indicating a potential shift in strategy for future projects.

Adam B. Vary from Variety discussed the hits (Venom) and misses (all non-Venom films) of Sony’s Spider-Man-related movies, which seem to culminate in Kraven the Hunter. His analysis delves into why Sony didn’t incorporate Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker into their films, despite his popularity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was not due to any agreement Sony made with Disney. As explained by Vary:

Based on information from a Sony insider, the agreement with Disney didn’t stop Sony from featuring Spider-Man in movies not carrying his title. The abundance of Peter Parkers, Gwen Stacys, and other Spider-characters in the “Spider-Verse” films is evidence of this. However, there was a sense within the studio that viewers might find it jarring if Tom Holland’s Spiderman appeared in a non-MCU live-action film, given the conclusion of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the Marvel Studios projects like “Loki” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which have set clear boundaries for the Marvel multiverse.

It’s clear that Sony has previously showcased Spider-Man in their animated series, indicating that this wasn’t a problematic choice. However, we now realize they could have used Tom Holland’s character specifically in their films. The question then arises: would movies like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter have performed better if they had included Holland? Likely so.

Although Sony had the option to incorporate Holland in their movies, it’s clear why they opted out. However, this decision also presents an opportunity for future Sony Marvel productions. The multiverse is teeming with Spider-characters, a fact demonstrated by Sony’s own “Spider-Verse” series. This opens up the possibility for the studio to introduce new live-action characters such as Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, or even a combination of all three in their standalone films. Meanwhile, Tom Holland can continue his role as the MCU’s variant Spider-Man.

This arrangement would give Sony the freedom to reintegrate Spider-Man into their own “Spider-Man” films, without being bound by multiverse regulations. Moreover, it would pave the way for an epic crossover movie where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man interacts with Sony’s version. The idea of multiple live-action Spider-Mans sharing the screen is something that fans have eagerly anticipated. Such a cinematic spectacle might outperform box office hits like “Madame Web” or “Kraven the Hunter” in terms of audience appeal. Despite this, Sony continues to claim that “Morbius” was financially successful.
