According to Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, who spoke at a press conference following the release of the company’s latest financial report, it is anticipated that Marathon, Sony’s upcoming major live-service project, will be launched before March 2026. She stated that “We are currently addressing any issues” and emphasized her confidence in this launch by saying “We firmly believe that this release will take place.
The CFO indicated that while the exact release date isn’t set in stone just yet, there’s a strong likelihood of an announcement regarding a new release date happening somewhere around Fall 2025.
Originally planned for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in September 2025, Bungie’s upcoming game has been pushed back due to the need to consider community input and testing results.
During the ongoing development of Marathon, Sony is gradually increasing control over Bungie, a change that seems to be progressing smoothly as part of its integration into PlayStation Studios. This transition, according to Tao, may ultimately reduce Bungie’s autonomy in future projects.
In 2022, Sony purchased Bungie for approximately $3.6 billion USD, asserting that the studio’s expertise in live-service games would aid their expansion in this area and enhance their multifaceted endeavors across various platforms.
Initially, Bungie operated independently, but issues such as Marathon’s problematic development, internal disputes, and management problems began to undermine Sony’s faith in this arrangement. To address these concerns, Sony announced a restructuring plan last year that aimed to bring Bungie under the umbrella of PlayStation Studios, giving Sony greater oversight over the developer’s operations.
