As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement when it comes to the third installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise. Growing up with Sega Genesis and its speedy mascot, I remember the thrill of collecting rings and zipping through zones at breakneck speed.
It seems that production companies indeed embody the saying “Speed is key”, don’t they? We find ourselves at the threshold of the theatrical debut for Paramount’s third Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and Variety hints that a fourth film is already in the works! Surprisingly, it’s not too distant; we might expect it in Spring 2027. The popular family-oriented franchise has been a huge success for Paramount, following the initial teaser of the first movie which caused some issues necessitating adjustments to Sonic’s design. However, these changes have clearly paid off.
The initial two Sonic films earned a total of approximately $725 million globally at the box office and over $180 million from merchandise sales. This is quite significant, particularly for family films with smaller budgets. Although they didn’t reach the same level of success as The Super Mario Bros., which grossed an impressive $1.3 billion on its own, Sonic still managed to generate a substantial amount of revenue for Paramount and Sega. In addition to the Sonic movies, Paramount+’s Knuckles spinoff series has further boosted the franchise’s potential, providing a steady stream of income for both parties. To put it simply, the Sonic films and the Knuckles series have provided Paramount and Sega with a considerable amount of leverage within their respective franchises.
In the upcoming movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” directed by Jeff Fowler (also director of the first two), Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails team up to battle a new foe, Shadow the Hedgehog, as well as their longtime adversary Doctor Robotnik. Jim Carrey reprises his role as the eccentric, shouty Dr. Robotnik, while Keanu Reeves takes on the part of the villain Shadow the Hedgehog. Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba return as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles respectively. The film premieres in theaters this weekend.
