‘Something Very Magical’: Florence Pugh On Her Instant Connection With We Live In Time Co-Star Andrew Garfield

As an ardent fan who has followed both Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield’s careers with bated breath, the news of their collaboration in “We Live In Time” was music to my ears. But little did I know that this film would not only be a visual treat but also a heart-wrenching journey that would resonate deeply due to its poignant themes and the undeniable chemistry between the two leads.

For the initial time, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield worked together in John Crowley’s emotional romantic drama titled We Live In Time. Their rapport on set developed swiftly and was described as “enchanting.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress from Dune Part 2 expressed her seamless camaraderie with Garfield, a connection that clearly manifested on screen as well.

She declared, “An extraordinary, enchanting incident occurred instantly.” Furthermore, she explained that they desired to excel for one another, connect with one another, and support one another in every way. As their shared comprehension deepened over the filming process, it grew stronger.

By the end of the film, it felt like saying goodbye to a “whole world that we had created and a whole idea of what their lives were.” The Amazing Spiderman actor also chimed in and resonated with Pugh’s feelings, adding that he looks for the same qualities in a co-star that he looks for in real life connections.

In simpler terms, he explained that when people form relationships – be it as a parent, friend, or partner – there’s something special and powerful that develops between them, almost like an energy or chemistry. This “something” is almost spiritual in nature, according to him, and Garfield found it easier to connect with this divine bond since the topic was personal to him.

We Live In Time” is a story that unfolds over a decade, focusing on characters Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh), who experience life’s ups and downs, careers, parenthood, and the challenges of coping with cancer in Almut’s case. Andrew Garfield, known for his role in “Tick Tick Boom,” drew upon personal experiences as he lost his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2019, understanding the emotional exhaustion and sorrow that come with managing such a terminal illness.

Making this movie was like receiving a unique present, for it teaches us that grief can be a precious gift. This is one of the film’s many charms – it shows that grief may be our sole means of accessing genuine love,” he explained about his experience creating this film. The bond with life deepens significantly once we have felt a connection to the realm of death.

He aspires that all he’s conveyed through his personal experiences shines on screen and offers solace to viewers. The actor finds it remarkable that the portrayal of grief is universal, even though each person experiences it uniquely. Regardless, audiences will find a connection with it in one way or another due to its shared nature.

We Live in Time hits theaters on October 11.
