The popular horror comic Something Is Killing the Children is becoming a movie and animated series. Blumhouse, known for scary films like Black Phone 2 and Five Night’s At Freddy’s 2, has obtained the rights to adapt the BOOM! Studios comic.

Originally released by BOOM! Studios in 2019, Something Is Killing the Children has become a massive hit, selling over 5 million copies globally. It’s the most successful original horror comic since The Walking Dead. The story centers around a world where children are aware of monsters, but adults aren’t, and its popularity quickly attracted attention from Hollywood. After a competitive bidding process, Blumhouse secured the rights, winning out over Lionsgate and Netflix.
Blumhouse is creating both a movie and an animated series at the same time. James Tynion IV, who co-created the series, will lead its development. Jason Blum, head of Blumhouse, will produce the movie, with Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. Stephen Christy and Tynion will produce the film on behalf of BOOM! Studios/Penguin Random House.
Scott Tynion and Christy are executive producers on the series. Adam Yoelin, Mette Norkjaer, and co-creator Werther Dell’Edera will also produce.

Something is Killing the Children centers around Erica Slaughter, a highly-trained monster hunter who works for a secret organization. When terrifying monsters begin preying on children in a small town, Slaughter steps in to protect them and eliminate the threat. The comic series has quickly become a huge success, earning critical praise and multiple Eisner Awards.
Here’s What Blum Has to Say About the Acquisition
Blum noted that it’s clear why both readers and critics have loved Something Is Killing the Children. The comic book series by James and Werther plays on our deepest fears, drawing us into a captivating story and introducing Erica Slaughter, a powerful and relatable hero who battles the monsters hidden in the shadows.

James Tynion, the creator of the comic book Something Is Killing the Children, says it profoundly impacted his life and work. He’s thrilled to be collaborating with Jason Blum and Blumhouse, believing they’re the perfect partners to bring the story and its main character, Erica Slaughter, to a wider audience. Tynion emphasizes Blumhouse’s exceptional understanding of horror and expresses excitement for their upcoming plans together.
Blumhouse is delivering plenty of monster-hunting action with both a new movie and a scripted TV series on the way. Fans of the comic books have something to celebrate too – a new series called Fall of the House of Slaughter was just announced at New York Comic-Con, and it will lead up to the release of the milestone 50th issue in 2026. Stay tuned for more details on the film and TV show as they become available.
