Director Raoul Walsh felt that Marion Morrison, the young actor he was working with, needed a more impactful name for the screen. Sources at Imprimis say Walsh proposed naming him after Revolutionary War hero Anthony Wayne. While ‘Anthony Wayne’ was initially considered, they ultimately settled on ‘John Wayne.’ Morrison didn’t have a say in the decision, but the name quickly caught on and became iconic.

Although The Big Trail was a visually stunning and ambitious film, it wasn’t a financial success when it first came out. As a result, John Wayne spent several years appearing in less expensive movies. However, over time, both the film and Wayne’s performance in it have earned increasing praise from critics and audiences.

John Wayne was also famously known as Duke. He earned this nickname as a boy while living in Glendale, California. He frequently went to the local fire station with his Airedale Terrier, also named Duke. The firefighters started calling young John “Little Duke,” and the name stuck with him as he grew up. He was even listed as Duke Morrison in the movie Words and Music, and from then on, he was known as Duke for the rest of his life.
