SOLO CSV Is a New Madrid Art Venue That Should Be On Your Radar

Summary

  • SOLO CSV is the latest can’t-miss art venue in Madrid, Spain, hailing from the international SOLO arts project and collection led by Ana Gervás and David Cantolla
  • Currently on view is WE ALL SHINE ON, an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Aaron Johnson, at its recently-opened Bowman Hal art gallery

Madrid is famous for its Old Masters like Picasso, Bosch, and Goya, but it’s increasingly becoming a hub for contemporary art. The city is gaining recognition on the world art scene, and a new space called SOLO CSV – part of the international arts project SOLO – is adding to its growing list of must-visit art destinations.

I recently visited the new space for Ana Gervás and David Cantolla’s collection, and it’s fantastic! It’s right near the beautiful Parque del Oeste. They opened it in June with a show by William Mackinnon, and now they’re exhibiting Aaron Johnson’s incredible work, *WE ALL SHINE ON*, in their purpose-built gallery – it’s truly a cosmic experience!

To revitalize the space, SOLO collaborated with Spanish architects Estudio Herreros to convert the former 4,000-square-meter printworks into a unique and engaging art experience. Rather than a traditional, sterile white-walled gallery, CSV feels like a constantly unfolding maze that blends industrial elements with a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The design intentionally creates surprising moments, with interiors that blur the lines between inside and out, and windows offering unexpected views of the art collection.

Beyond Bowman Hal, the site doubles as a home base for the many projects that make up the SOLO arts incubator at large: ONKAOS, its digital arts and new media initiative; a spacious, on-site conservation and restoration lab; and the recently-announced Movimiento 37, an experimental ode to art as a cross-cultural dialogue, set to debut with a spectral showcase of sound and video works by Georgian artist Koka Nikoladze.

I’m so excited about the opening of CSV! It’s fantastic that the core collection of over 1,200 pieces from what used to be Colleción SOLO is still available, and this new space feels like a really fresh start. It truly solidifies the collection’s place as a central part of the city’s art scene and really caters to anyone with a passion for contemporary art. Even though it’s still growing, CSV has quickly become one of my favorite places to explore – it’s a must-see for any art lover in the city!
