Raised amidst the peak of Colombia’s cocaine trade, Vergara personally witnessed some of the tragic consequences this type of enterprise can bring, including losing one brother to assassination by cartel members in the early 90s. Looking back on her brother’s fate, as detailed by Deadline, she articulated how people might be led astray by circumstances and necessity, and emphasized that poor choices don’t necessarily label a person as irredeemably evil.

Vergara found Blanco intriguing due to her multifaceted nature. Known as the “Cocaine Godmother,” she was an infamous drug lord, yet she also displayed tender maternal affection and sought refuge in America for a comfortable lifestyle, although it came without a clear conscience.

Vergara stated, “Upon seeing Griselda, I recognized her – mind you, I didn’t kill husbands or anything like that. We share some commonalities: we’re both immigrants, mothers, and strong individuals. However, not everyone resorts to heinous acts as she did.

Vergara was struck by the way Blanco climbed his way up in the predominantly male underworld, finding it both astonishing and disquieting. Yet, she keeps in mind the ethical dilemma of praising such an individual.

In response to the positive response to her miniseries, she shared, “My intention was to portray her in a way that audiences might find themselves secretly cheering for her, despite her being someone they perhaps shouldn’t support.

Sofia Vergara acknowledged that her character was truly terrifying, emphasizing how she had to balance playing someone who was equally captivating and repulsive.
