SNL’s First Episode Will Re-Air on NBC to Celebrate Its 50th Anniversary

The beloved sketch comedy series, Saturday Night Live (SNL), is set to commemorate its 50th anniversary by re-running its inaugural episode. On February 16, NBC will broadcast the first SNL episode, following a three-hour special event on the anniversary. Moreover, a unique episode featuring numerous distinguished guests, some of whom have already been announced and others as surprises, will air the subsequent day.

The debut episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL) originally aired on October 11, 1975, with comedian George Carlin as host. You might recall him from his well-known comedy routine about the seven words you can’t say on TV. Interestingly, at that time, the show wasn’t yet known as SNL; it was called NBC’s Saturday Night. The latest movie titled “Saturday Night” offers a look into the chaotic process of the live broadcast for the first time. While not the greatest film ever made, it certainly sheds light on what happened that October night.

Just as today’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) features musical guests, so did NBC’s Saturday Night in the past. Notable musicians like Billy Preston and Janice Ian graced the stage. The show also boasted an ensemble cast consisting of Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner. Similar to modern SNL, they occasionally welcomed special guests such as Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets.

On Valentine’s Day, NBC is set to air a collection of beloved holiday sketches from past seasons of Saturday Night Live prior to the rebroadcast of the first episode. Immediately following the first episode, the documentary titled “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music,” directed by Questlove, will be shown.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, NBC is arranging numerous events that will culminate in “SNL50: The Anniversary Episode” on February 16. This special episode boasts an impressive lineup of confirmed guests like Quinta Brunson, Bad Bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, Robert De Niro, Ayo Edebiri, Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, and more.
