SNL’s Bowen Yang Jokes About Chappell Roan Fan Harassment During Hippo Moo Deng Sketch

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for pop culture and entertainment, I find Bowen Yang’s portrayal of Moo Deng, the internet-famous baby hippo, to be nothing short of brilliant. His ability to transform into various characters and imbue them with such depth and wit is truly remarkable.

Bowen Yang transformed into a Hippo for an SNL sketch about a baby hippopotamus named Moo Deng from Thailand, who became an internet sensation overnight. But the sketch surprisingly threw shade at pop star Chappell Roan with multiple references. The fake talk show Weekend Update, hosted by Colin Jost, welcomed the baby hippo (Yang) for a one-on-one discussion.

Jost observed that internet sensation Moo Deng has been targeted with bananas and seafood by visitors in an attempt to grab her attention. “And now, it’s Moo Deng’s turn to speak,” the presenter declared, as Yang appeared on screen fully costumed as a hippopotamus. Over the past 10 weeks, the comedian has been busy, running around, munching lettuce, and attempting to squirt water from a hose.

As Yand, also known as Moo Deng, she expressed similarities with Roan, who’s taking a break from performances to prioritize health. “It’s time to establish some limits,” she stated. She further emphasized that it’s crucial for people to understand that women are not obligated to anyone and should not be expected to take photos just because they admire their abilities.

Moo Deng explained that when I’m stumbling around in my area and nipping at my trainer’s leg, I am simply doing my job. This task is what we refer to as ‘the project.’ Please refrain from calling out my name or requesting photos during these moments,” (paraphrased)

Speaking about her unique trait, she mentioned, “When asked, I described myself as having a flexible physique that’s springy.” Before she became well-known, only two hippos were renowned – those from the board game ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos’ and Jada Pinkett Smith’s character in Madagascar.

Yang remarked, “Now, I’m even the favorite hippo among my fellow hippos, similar to how your favorite artist adores her own favorite artist,” referencing a quote from Pinky Ponky Club’s singer. When questioned about the strain and expectations of being under global scrutiny, Moo Deng likened it to living in a cage, much like an animal confined in a zoo. The host seemed to suggest that this is indeed a fitting analogy for her situation.

It seems your life is quite similar to Chappell Roan’s recently. Are you familiar with Chappell Roan?” Jost inquired. “Indeed, I am, Colin, given that I’m ten weeks old. And by the way, please respect her privacy,” Yang responded.
