Michael Che, a comedian from “Saturday Night Live,” is speaking out against the recent suspension of SNAP benefits. The program, which provides food assistance, stopped distributing funds on Saturday because of the current government shutdown.
Che shared his thoughts in an Instagram post, calling the freeze “really f**** up.”
He also spoke about what he believes is a racial element in the online response, noting that he’s seen many racist videos celebrating the fact that some Black families are struggling to afford groceries. He questioned the idea that because some people have misused welfare programs, no one should receive assistance.
Che explained that the country often rewards those who get ahead by cutting corners and exploiting loopholes. However, he pointed out a double standard, stating that when people with limited resources manage to improve their situation, they are often judged much more harshly, particularly Black individuals.
The comedian talked about growing up poor, sharing how difficult it was for his family. He wrote, “I remember relying on government assistance like free cheese and powdered milk, and being embarrassed to use food stamps in front of friends. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely wasn’t glamorous, I promise.”

Okay, so things got really messy with food stamps – SNAP, you know? It all started when the government basically stalled on October 1st because Congress couldn’t agree on a budget. From what I’m hearing, the Republican plan in the Senate is way short of the votes it needs – like 60 votes off! That gives the Democrats some serious leverage to fight for what they want, which could mean big changes for the program.
On October 26th, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the agency that runs the SNAP program, said that benefits would be cut off beginning November 1st.
Despite the administration’s objections, two federal judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island have ordered the use of reserve funds to cover some SNAP benefits. The administration must file a response to these rulings by Monday.
Che’s recent post points to increasing worries about how the government shutdown and the pause on SNAP benefits are impacting families who are struggling, especially in Black communities.
