SMG Reveals BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Revival’s Official Title

Fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival on Hulu, and now we have a title! Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on the Shut Up, Evan podcast (according to Deadline) that the series will be called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. This seems to confirm long-standing rumors that the town of Sunnydale – built over the dangerous Hellmouth – will be rebuilt. The original series ended 25 years ago with Sunnydale being destroyed, and it appears the new show will address its reconstruction.

Sarah Michelle Gellar clarified that the new Buffy series isn’t a sequel, a reboot, or a restart – it’s a continuation of the original story. She explained the show will explore Buffy’s current life and the state of the world, both with and without her involvement. It won’t immediately focus on the original characters, and the title, Buffy: New Sunnydale, reflects this – it’s still Buffy’s story, but in a new context. Despite this description, the series seems to function as a legacy sequel, introducing a new generation of characters, like Ryan Kiera Armstrong, alongside returning characters acting as mentors.

Although the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn’t reach the same viewership as popular ’90s shows like The X-Files, it remains a hugely influential series. Sarah Michelle Gellar recognizes the pressure of revisiting the show, and it was director Chloë Zhao who ultimately persuaded her to consider a return. Gellar explained that they’re taking their time to ensure any new version lives up to the original. “We don’t want to damage the show’s reputation,” she said, “and I won’t move forward unless I’m confident it can be done right.” Hulu is expected to announce its plans for New Sunnydale later this year.
