As a lifelong space enthusiast who’s spent countless nights gazing up at the stars, the idea of having a bottle of Eau de Space and Eau de Luna is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up, I dreamt of becoming an astronaut, exploring the cosmos, and experiencing the wonders that lie beyond our atmosphere.
Humans have always gazed at the stars and pondered about what lies beyond our world. However, the majority of us will never experience traveling to outer space. But, it doesn’t prevent us from knowing what it might smell like up there. In fact, Eau de Space, a unique fragrance developed by NASA as part of their space program, is now accessible for purchase by everyone.
Four years after a successful Kickstarter campaign, people who weren’t backers can now experience the scent of outer space with Eau de Space. This fragrance is derived from an old formula NASA developed decades ago to help astronauts train for their missions. NASA wanted to ensure that its astronauts were fully prepared for all possible experiences in space, including the scents they’d encounter during their journey away from Earth.
In simpler terms, people who have been in space report that it smells like a mix of odors such as gunpowder, rum, fruits, grilled meat, and even burnt cookies. The aroma is often described as lingering and distinct.
Wonderful! Absolutely, those are scents we’d be delighted to have around. Many people find the aroma of burnt cookies quite endearing, a symbol of nostalgia rather than disappointment or failure.
If curiosity is still going to get the better of you, though, and you want to smell like an astronaut that just came back in from a space walk, you can for $49.99. That’s what it costs to order a 100 ml bottle of Eau de Space. Fortunately its packaging is a lot more pleasant. The sleek custom bottle also comes with an “atomizer.” But why stop there? For the same price you can also opt for a 100ml bottle that will let you smell like the Moon. Eau de Luna is based on the smell Apollo astronauts described after visiting our lunar neighbor. They said it had “a unique smell, that’s hard to describe…like spent gunpowder.”
…It’s even more delightful. To be honest, it’s enjoyable to encounter these scents just once, but understanding that this is what space odor is like makes the realization that we might not be able to personally visit space a bit less disappointing.
