Alfred Gough, who helped create the popular series “Smallville”, shares insights into rumors about a potential follow-up animated series for the long-running show.
Although Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum appear willing, it seems unlikely that the upcoming animated sequel will materialize immediately due to James Gunn’s involvement with the DC Universe and the newly announced Superman film.
Gough Says DC Reboot Puts Smallville Revival on Hold
On the Talk Ville Podcast, Gough joined Rosenbaum and Welling in discussion. As of January 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken charge over DC films and television. Superman will make a return to the big screen on July 11 with David Corenswet portraying the new Man of Steel. In reference to this, Gough stated:
In a recent Talk Ville Podcast episode, Gough was joined by Rosenbaum and Welling for a discussion. Starting from January 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran will manage DC’s film and TV productions. The upcoming Superman film, starring David Corenswet as the latest Man of Steel, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11. In light of this news, Gough shared his thoughts:
It seems that many ongoing projects face challenges due to leadership changes, and Warner Bros., having experienced significant transformation, is no exception. Their decision to re-introduce Superman once more, regrettably, appears to delay our project’s progress temporarily.
Noteworthy is that under Gunn’s leadership, The CW’s “Superman & Lois” TV series, featuring Tyler Hoechlin, has recently concluded after four seasons instead of the initially planned seven. It appears that Gunn intends for his version of Superman to be pivotal in this new universe.
Gough Remains Hopeful for Smallville Animated Series
Despite the animated Smallville series appearing to be firmly on the ground, Gough remains hopeful that it will come to fruition.
I believe there’s potential for a comeback with your characters, similar to how they are known as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Animation seems like the ideal approach considering the scope of the story and time involved. It allows us to continue telling the story beyond the original series.
How to watch
Smallville ran on television from the years 2001 through 2011. You can catch all ten seasons on MAX. Additionally, DC Comics published a tie-in comic book for Smallville, focusing on the story of Clark becoming Superman in Season 11.
