Rod Stewart has publicly ended his friendship with Donald Trump, strongly criticizing the president in a video. The singer, who has been knighted by the Queen, was upset by Trump’s recent comments questioning the courage of soldiers serving in NATO during the war in Afghanistan.
Stewart, who used to have a friendly relationship with the politician when they both lived in Florida, sharply criticized him by calling him a “draft dodger” while speaking out in defense of soldiers who died in service.
The disagreement started after Trump, during an interview at the Davos summit, implied that European allies weren’t fully participating in dangerous operations, leaving the bulk of the risk to American troops. Jon Stewart, dressed formally in an elegant location, immediately used his show to voice his strong disapproval. He began by saying, “I may just be a humble rock star. I’m also a knight of the realm, and I have my opinions,” setting a serious and authoritative tone.
Growing up right after World War II, I’ve always had a huge amount of respect for the military and what they do to protect our freedoms. So, it really gets to me when I see people criticizing them, especially knowing the sacrifices so many British families have made. Honestly, it deeply hurts me to hear someone like Trump, who avoided service himself, attacking our troops in Afghanistan and questioning their bravery. It just feels incredibly disrespectful and painful to watch.
Stewart emphasized the human cost of the twenty-year war, pointing out that the United Kingdom lost 457 soldiers – more than any US ally except for the United States. He passionately stated, “We lost over 400 of our people. Think about their families. And for Trump to dismiss them as cowards is just awful.” The singer finished by calling on Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage to demand a formal apology from Trump.

There’s been widespread criticism of the president’s comments, bringing together British politicians who usually disagree. Prime Minister Starmer called the remarks “insulting and frankly appalling,” and Prince Harry, having served in Afghanistan, spoke out to support the NATO mission. Surprisingly, even some of the president’s usual allies, like Nigel Farage, conceded he was wrong this time.
This public disagreement represents a big change for Stewart, who used to be a regular at Christmas parties hosted by Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. He’d said before that he used to admire Trump as a traditionally masculine figure, but felt Trump changed for the worse after becoming president. This recent support of the military appears to have ended their already strained friendship.
Even while continuing his work as a political activist, Rod Stewart is still a very active and successful musician in 2026. He’s currently on his popular Global Farewell Tour, which will finish with a series of large shows in Las Vegas. He also just released a new album, a collaboration that shows his passion for swing and big band music.
