Sir Ian McKellen Is Not Pondering Retirement, Wants to Return as Gandalf

It seems like Sir Ian McKellen is open to returning as Gandalf, given his enthusiasm and determination to reprise the role, as confirmed in his statements. However, it’s important to note that the decision ultimately depends on the scripts and offers that come through for the new Lord of the Rings film. As for a joke, here’s one: “If The Hobbit trilogy was McKellen’s last job, he should better get it right, hadn’t he? And since he hasn’t shaved in months, maybe we can expect a beard-y performance!”

Recently, it was disclosed that a fresh installment of The Lord of the Rings series was indeed scheduled for release in 2026, and Peter Jackson would resume his duties as producer. The title was subsequently unveiled as The Search for Gollum. Moreover, some specifics about the storyline were also shared. Furthermore, we came to know that Andy Serkis not only be directing the film but would also be reprising his famous role in the prequel movie.

This was definitely a refreshing piece of news for all fans of Jackson’s films, and as you might assume, the rumor mill quickly commenced as fans discussed the possibility of some old characters and actors returning. And while there were no issues in most cases, one character soon became the topic of debate.

It’s quite likely that the character being discussed is Gandalf, given that Sir Ian McKellen, who portrays him, is currently 85 years old. Although he remains active and continues to work on stage, fans are curious about whether McKellen might return to the role. The actor himself has spoken about this topic recently.

Recently, we shared information about McKellen’s thoughts on reprising the role of Gandalf. Instead of being excessively optimistic or excessively pessimistic, he did express a wish to don the costume once more.

To understand that you’re mortal, simply glance at your contact list. So when a task or proposal arrives, the thought often crosses your mind, “This could be my final assignment. No, I can’t do it.” Therefore, if playing Falstaff is my last role, I should make sure to perform it flawlessly, right? (…). And I haven’t shaved in months. However, there’s no script, no offer, no blueprint. (…). If I’m still breathing.

In a later conversation with The Big Issue, however, he showed noticeable excitement and firm resolve about resuming the role. His remarks clearly indicate this intention.

“Excitement for The Lord of the Rings series doesn’t seem to slow down. I can’t disclose any further details. However, I’ve been informed that there will be additional films and Gandalf will likely be featured in them. When? That information is not available yet. So, they need to move swiftly regarding the script. It’s still under development.”

These events unfolded following a fairly recent incident on stage where the actor slipped, causing concern among spectators about his advanced age affecting his acting abilities. However, McKellen emphatically dismissed such speculation.

“I’ve got some lingering emotional baggage to handle, and my recent fall off the stage was quite a shock. As I hit the ground, I thought it was the end. My mind was filled with thoughts like ‘This is the end’. In that moment, I even yelled out, ‘My neck is broken, I’m dying’, but I can’t remember actually saying that. Clearly, my mind and body were both reacting to the fall in intense ways. It was an emotional experience. Falls happen throughout life, but at my age, it’s not always easy to get back up. I usually keep busy with work or preparations for work, but lately, I’ve been contemplating what might be the best course of action. I’ve decided to take the rest of the year off, not because I have to, but simply because I want to.”

It’s clear that McKellen is open to coming back, and as the saying goes, where there’s a desire, there’s a path to follow, isn’t it?
