Sinéad O’Connor’s Will Urges Children to ‘Milk’ Unreleased Music for Maximum Value

The late Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor, who tragically passed away in July 2023, made certain that her children were aware of her wishes concerning any unpublished music she had created.

As reported by The Sun through probate documents, O’Connor expressed a desire for her unpublished albums to be managed with care. Specifically, she instructed her children to release the music in a way that maximizes its potential value.

After settling all outstanding debts, legal costs, and funeral expenses, O’Connor’s estate was estimated to be worth approximately £1.4 million. Her former husband, music producer John Reynolds, was appointed as the executor of her will.

2013 saw the signing of the document, well before Sinéad O’Connor embraced Islam in 2018. This agreement also contained distinct burial specifications: she was to be laid to rest dressed as a priest, with a Hebrew Bible and her 2007 album Theology by her side.

In O’Connor’s will, she designated particular gifts for each of her children. Her late son Shane was set to inherit her sacred religious items, while her youngest son, Yeshua, received her collection of guitars. Additionally, she granted her children the authority to decide how they would handle her remains (i.e., her ashes).

In a 2021 interview with People, O’Connor made it plain to her children what she wanted regarding her legacy: “If I were to pass away suddenly tomorrow, before you dial 911, reach out to my accountant first to ensure that the record companies don’t start releasing my music without informing you about the earnings.

Sinéad O’Connor, well-known for her 1987 debut album The Lion and the Cobra, achieved global stardom with her 1990 album titled I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. This album’s popular track, a remake of The Family’s Nothing Compares 2 U, reached number one on charts globally. Most recently, her last album, I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, was released in the year 2014.

Before her unfortunate demise, O’Connor had unveiled plans for an album in 2024 and a global tour to go along with it. She ultimately succumbed to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
