Simu Liu Wants Melissa Barrera to Be the DCU’s Wonder Woman

James Gunn’s DC Universe will feature Wonder Woman, but Gal Gadot won’t be reprising her role. As of early 2026, no one has been cast as the new Wonder Woman. However, Simu Liu, known for playing Shang-Chi, has publicly stated he’d like to see Melissa Barrera take on the part.

In a recent interview with JoBlo, actor Liu spoke highly of his co-star, Barrera, with whom he appeared in Peacock’s The Copenhagen Test. He praised her dedication, saying she consistently challenges herself. He even suggested she has the potential to play Wonder Woman, noting that her commitment during stunt training reminded him of the iconic superhero. He jokingly added that he hoped James Gunn, or someone else who might be listening, would take notice.

Melissa Barrera became well-known in the US for playing Samantha Carpenter in the Scream movies (2022 and Scream VI). Although she was fired after making political statements, her career is still thriving. She recently gave a fantastic performance in Abigail and has other projects coming up. However, landing the lead role as Wonder Woman would truly elevate her to superstardom.

It’s hard to imagine her in the role, as she’s not particularly tall or muscular – she’s about 5’7″. But, like they did with Robert Downey Jr. by giving him lifts, anything is achievable with movie magic. Gal Gadot is tall, but not overly muscular, and Ana de Armas is capable of handling the physical demands and action required of a DC hero.

James Gunn recently stated that as of July 2025, no actors have been cast for a particular role, as they’re focusing on finalizing the script. However, if Melissa Barrera were looking for a part, she should definitely consider auditioning for Wonder Woman! And Simu Liu is publicly offering his support, saying he believes in her.
