Simu Liu is sharing some amusing behind-the-scenes stories about filming Avengers: Doomsday, and they all highlight how much of a personality Robert Downey Jr. brought to the set.
During filming, Robert Downey Jr. had a whole area of trailers that the cast and crew playfully nicknamed “Downey Land,” according to a recent interview with Collider.
Simu Liu, reprising his role as Shang-Chi in the new Marvel movie, mentioned that the elaborate set was immediately noticeable and quickly became a popular topic of conversation among the cast and crew.
Liu described Robert Downey Jr.’s on-set space as more than just a large area—it felt like a completely separate world. Downey had connected multiple trailers and created a private lounge at base camp decorated with vibrant, Warhol-style art, but all the images featured himself. Liu noted that Downey was fully aware of how extravagant the setup was.
Liu remembered his first time visiting Robert Downey Jr.’s trailer, initially thinking it was a typical visit. That changed when it was time for lunch. Liu had brought his own food from the set, but Downey immediately told him that wasn’t necessary. As Liu recalls, Downey said, “Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here.” Shortly after, chefs arrived and created a complete buffet spread right there in the trailer.
Liu described the experience as surreal, particularly seeing famous actors pass by while he was having a meal. He confessed he had to consciously avoid starstruck behavior and remember he was there to do a job.
During the interview, Liu shared that he had to suppress his enthusiasm to maintain his concentration. He explained, “I needed to focus on the task at hand,” and emphasized that he reminded himself to treat everyone with respect, despite feeling overwhelmed by meeting them.
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie will have a huge cast, bringing back many familiar Marvel heroes, including actors from the X-Men franchise, as well as introducing some new characters. Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time playing the villain Doctor Doom, a significant departure from his well-known role as Iron Man.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18.
