Sigourney Weaver To Make West End Stage Debut In The Tempest Alongside Tom Hiddleston And Hayley Atwell? Here’s What Report Says

As a dedicated follower of Shakespearean plays and a long-time admirer of these amazing actors, I am absolutely thrilled to see Sigourney Weaver, Tom Hiddleston, and Hayley Atwell gracing the historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane! It’s not every day that we get to witness such iconic figures bring authenticity and brilliance to Shakespearian plays.

1) Shakespearean productions are making a comeback at the famous Theatre Royal Drury Lane, also known as The Lane! Director Jaime Loyd is excited to revive genuine plays on a stage he believed was destined to be filled with musicals indefinitely. To celebrate this return, two of Shakespeare’s timeless classics—The Tempest featuring Sigourney Weaver and Much Ado About Nothing starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell—will take center stage!

Sigourney Weaver making her West End stage debut

Sigourney Weaver, famously recognized for her roles in Ridley Scott’s Alien series and James Cameron’s Avatar films, is set to make her first appearance on the West End stage with The Tempest. With a background in Shakespearean theater, having previously played Portia in an off-Broadway revival of The Merchant of Venice (1986) and Goneril in a traveling production of King Lear, she brings valuable experience to this new venture.

Although Weaver had made a big name for herself in theater with impressive credit in stage plays, she hadn’t acted out Shakespeare in public for more than three decades. However, it was the intriguing role of Prospero, the mysterious lead character in The Tempest, that enticed her to return to the stage and portray it from a female perspective.

Though the character of Weaver’s role was initially intended for a male actor, Loyd experienced a sudden insight that performing as Prospero could generate a captivating stage energy. With little expectation, the director reached out to her agent through email.

Delighting and astonished by an animated email from Weaver, he discovered it in his inbox the following morning. After an enjoyable one-to-one encounter, she expressed great enthusiasm and prepared herself for her debut at The Lane.

Lloyd shared with Deadline that he’s watched “Alien” more times than any other film. The thought that crossed his mind was, “What an incredible experience it would be to collaborate with someone I’ve admired since my childhood!” Wow, what a moment!

Tom Hiddleston And Hayley Atwell will play lovers in another Shakespearian play

Loyd is giving two classic plays, “Much Ado About Nothing” included, a new lease on life. Hiddleston and Atwell have been cast as Benedick and Beatrice in Shakespeare’s comedy. According to the director, these talented actors will create an unforgettable sparring match between their characters.

Hiddleston is recognized for his roles in Marvel’s Loki and The Night Manager, plus more. Atwell has recently appeared alongside Tom Cruise in the first and second installments of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.

1) Lloyd has had a lasting professional connection with both actors; he collaborated with the Loki actor on the mesmerizing adaptation of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal in 2019, and directed Atwell in Alexi Kaye Campbell’s play The Faith Machine in 2011. In subsequent years, he also worked with her again during the revival of Kaye’s play The Pride.

“He mentioned that those two veteran performers were once part of the Jamie Lloyd Company. In my opinion, they are undeniably among the most talented actors of our time, wouldn’t you agree?”

Loyd highlighted that the duo’s chemistry was immediate and intensified his eagerness to see them embody their roles. “They possess not only charm but also sharp wit,” he noted further.
