Siberian Lawmaker Found Operating Illegal Crypto Mining Operation in His Garage

Investigators found out that he purchased mining equipment online and set it up in his garage located in Krivodanovka village. It’s said that he connected these mining devices to an electrical substation using unconventional means, such as bypassing clamps and manipulating overhead power lines.

Authorities declared that an unlawful venture led to a theft of electricity valued around $61,350. Moreover, this activity reportedly put excessive stress on the local power distribution system. During the raid, police seized 16 mining rigs, with an estimated value exceeding $11,300, from the premises.

The case has been filed with the Novosibirsk District Court. If convicted, the lawmaker faces up to five years in prison under the Russian Criminal Code. The prosecution emphasized that unauthorized connections to power lines not only result in financial losses but also pose significant safety risks to the community.

In connection with an ongoing initiative by Novosibirsk authorities to combat the growing issue of unlawful cryptocurrency mining, it’s worth noting that a recent raid on a property in the Moshkovsky District revealed six administrative offenses linked to another illicit mining operation. The property owner is said to have made around 12 million rubles (equivalent to about $123,000) from these cryptocurrency mining activities.
