Showrunner Reveals If Pennywise Will Return in ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’

Jason Fuchs, the creator of the new HBO horror series *It: Welcome to Derry*, recently shared some details about the show. He revealed that Pennywise the Clown won’t appear immediately at the beginning of the series.

This show is a prequel to the movies *It* (2017) and *It Chapter Two* (2019), and it will reveal the origins of the evil that plagues the town of Derry.

I’m so excited for this new series! Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs are behind it, which is awesome, and Bill Skarsgård is back as Pennywise – and he’s even helping produce it now, which is really cool! The cast looks fantastic too, with Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider all joining in.

Development on the show started in 2022. Fuchs and Brad Kane are leading the creative side, and Andy Muschietti directed multiple episodes, including the first one. Filming began in May 2023, was paused due to the actors’ strike, and finished in August 2024. The series will debut on HBO on October 26th.

Fans are excited about the possibility of seeing Pennywise return, but Fuchs clarified that the show will take its time developing that storyline. He explained that the town of Derry is almost a character itself, and that the history of Derry and the entity known as ‘It’ are deeply connected. According to the source material, ‘It’ existed for thousands of years *before* Derry was even founded, meaning the town is a relatively new development in the larger mythology.

He explained that the first season will explore how both the town and the fear-feeding creature came to be. He asked, “Could Derry even exist without the creature?” This season will offer some clues about the creature’s origins, and the goal is to provide a full story that leaves viewers with a new understanding of the creature, the town’s rules, and what drives its behavior.

Run. #ITWelcomeToDerry premieres October 26 on HBO Max.

While the terrifying Pennywise will eventually show up, he won’t be the main focus at the beginning of the series. Instead, the show will explore how Derry transformed into the haunted town readers and viewers know from Stephen King’s book and earlier movies.

The upcoming book, *Welcome to Derry*, will delve deeper into the world of *It*, uncovering frightening new information about the creature’s origins. Readers will need to be patient before seeing that iconic red balloon again.
