Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane Promises ‘Crystal Lake’ Series Will Be “Worth the Wait”

As a long-time fan of the Friday the 13th franchise, I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming prequel series, Crystal Lake. Brad Caleb Kane taking over as showrunner in August 2024 was certainly a relief after Victor Fuller’s departure. Kane’s experience with prequels and horror series, particularly his work on It: Welcome to Derry, gives me confidence that he will do justice to the Friday the 13th universe.

The upcoming “Friday the 13th” prequel series titled “Crystal Lake” is progressing, and after some delay, we’re finally receiving some news. Brad Caleb Kane, who assumed the role of showrunner for the project in August 2024, recently communicated with the fans about the production.

On the 13th of December (which coincidentally fell on a Friday the 13th), Kane uploaded an Instagram photo showcasing Jason Voorhees and Betsy Palmer, who portrayed his mother, Pamela Voorhees, in the 1980 classic horror film.

Kane hinted in his post that although he wasn’t able to reveal much detail, the storyline has already been cracked, screenplays are being developed, and the aim is to provide fans with an edge-of-the-seat, action-packed, and fulfilling experience. He suggested that there would be further announcements coming in the upcoming year.

In my opinion, if Fuller had stayed, he could have truly rejuvenated the franchise. However, his departure left room for someone else to step up – that’s where Kane came in. With a background in prequels and horror series, Kane was thrilled about joining the Friday the 13th universe, given his affection for the iconic character Jason. Notably, he has also been involved in co-showrunning It: Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the hit It films.

The “Crystal Lake” series has been under development ever since October 2022, following Peacock’s direct-to-series order. This series is set to be produced by A24, which signifies their first significant endeavor based on an established intellectual property. As of now, the start date for production remains undisclosed.

In September 2024, Sean S. Cunningham, director of the original Friday the 13th movie, hinted that production company A24 might start filming in Australia by the end of the year. He added that a potential release date for Halloween 2025 was being considered, although he warned that plans could potentially alter.

One of the main inquiries among fans revolves around when the new series is set to debut. As of now, Peacock has not disclosed an official release date. However, Crystal Lake will continue the legacy of Friday the 13th: The Series, a show that was popular during the late 80s and early 90s. While the upcoming prequel series promises to delve deeper into the history of Friday the 13th, specific details are still being kept under wraps. For now, we can only wait anxiously to see how things unfold.

As anticipation grows around Crystal Lake, it’s evident that there’s still plenty of groundwork left to cover. The exact timing of filming or when we can stream the show remains uncertain, but it seems that A24 and Kane are committed to ensuring it’s a wait worth having.
