Should you confront the smugglers or report refugees to Captain Aelfyr in Avowed? (Escape Plan Side Quest)

At the onset of Avowed, Remei offers you the ‘Escape Plan’ side mission where she requests aid in helping a young pair escape to Thirdborn. Upon securing Ondra’s Kiss and deeds for refugee land in Thirdborn, they confess that they are being pursued for allegedly murdering two individuals. In response, smugglers who agreed to transport them out of Paradis have increased the price. This puts you in a tough spot with two possible decisions: either challenge the smugglers or inform Captain Aelfyr in Paradis about the refugees.

What happens if you report refugees to Captain Aelfyr in Escape Plan side quest?

Should you decide to inform Captain Aelfyr about the refugees, she will gratefully acknowledge your actions and immediately send the Steel Garrote agents to handle the situation. She makes it clear that their actions will serve as a stark reminder to all citizens within this city, demonstrating that justice is impartial and unyielding.

In the game, my ‘Resolve’ score wasn’t sufficient for one of the dialogue choices following her statement, but I believe that choice didn’t significantly alter the course of our discussion.

Completing the quest awards you 470xp, however, Kai will strongly disapprove of your choice. He’ll express that you’ve led them to their doom and neither you nor the empire benefit from this action. In my view, this decision and its consequences are less rewarding compared to the other quest outcome.

What happens if you confront the smugglers in Avowed’s Escape Plan side quest?

If you decide to challenge the smugglers, several scenarios could unfold. The most favorable outcome hinges on whether you assist Ilora in the ‘On Strange Shores’ main mission. Ilora is one of the smugglers and if you rescue her, she’ll relay to Captain Soldis that you spared her life at Northreach. In time, Soldis will concede defeat and direct you to inform the refugees that the agreement is finalized, without any cost to them.

If you decide not to release Ilora from her jail cell, Soldis may not keep his original promise about the price, and you’ll have to cover the additional cost instead. It seems that keeping faith with people in the realm of Eora can prove beneficial!

As a gamer, I just earned 78 experience points from this objective, but there’s more good news coming my way! I need to head back to Leoflaed to share the great news with them. Once I do, they’ll reward me with an additional 392 experience points and some other exciting rewards too!

Should you confront the smugglers or report the refugees in Avowed?

The more advantageous benefits arise from tackling the smugglers, and ideally avoiding having to cover any additional costs. Regardless of whether you end up paying it, the items that Leoflaed offers you are beneficial for enhancing your armor and weapons early in Avowed. Furthermore, it’s a morally superior outcome compared to condemning some unlucky refugees to their demise.

If you don’t have enough money for the smugglers, fail to rescue Ilora, and only wish to complete the side mission, you could inform Captain Aelfyr about the refugees. Be aware that Kai will be deeply disapproving of your actions.

In Avowed, it seems like the choice you’re about to make won’t significantly alter the primary narrative. Rest easy, gamer, as this decision doesn’t appear to carry any heavyweight implications further into our gaming journey together.
