Hulu has formally submitted its Emmy nominations for The Handmaid’s Tale’s final season, and one notable submission is Alexis Bledel in the guest actress category for drama series, recognized for her role in the finale episode, 610 – The Handmaid’s Tale. However, this entry could potentially encounter a rule challenge.
A recent Emmy rule change prevents actors from being considered in guest categories if they’ve already been nominated for leading or supporting roles on the same show. For instance, Alexis Bledel received a nomination as a supporting actress in 2018 following her appearance in seven episodes during that season.
Hulu is hoping that the Television Academy will take a second look at her case and potentially change the category for her submission from Supporting Drama Actress, perhaps even before the voting process starts on June 12.
The revised Emmy regulations intend to provide clarity on which appearances qualify as guest roles. As per these guidelines, an actor who has been previously nominated for a leading or supporting role in a series is not eligible to be submitted as a guest performer, regardless of screen time. This rule has already sparked some misunderstanding.
Meryl Streep wasn’t allowed to be nominated as a ‘guest star’ for the show “Only Murders in the Building”, despite appearing in only four episodes, due to her previous nomination. On the other hand, Paul Rudd, who introduced a new character in the same series, was almost eligible for the ‘guest category’, but he appeared in one episode more than the allowed limit.
Multiple professionals within the industry have expressed concerns about current rules not being flexible enough to handle situations where an actor reappears in a minor role following a significant break. There’s speculation that the controversy could prompt modifications to the Emmy rulebook in the future.
Hulu submitted 36 Emmy nominations for the TV show “The Handmaid’s Tale”, which wrapped up after six seasons on May 26th. Throughout its run, this series has garnered 76 nominations and 15 victories, one of which was a groundbreaking win for Outstanding Drama Series in its debut season – a first for a streaming platform.
Actress Elisabeth Moss has been put forward once more, and also for her directing role in the penultimate episode titled ‘Execution’. The nominations for best supporting actor include Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, and O-T Fagbenle. In the category of best supporting actress, Hulu submitted Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, and Ann Dowd.
Apart from Bledel, Hulu also put forward Cherry Jones (in episode 602) and D’Arcy Carden (in episode 608) for consideration in the ‘Guest Actress in a Drama Series’ category.
