Shogun Season 2 Sets Cast, Writers, Directors as Production Begins in January

FX has officially begun production on Season 2 of Shogun in Vancouver, starting this January. Along with the production start, the team announced the complete cast, writers, and directors for the new season, which will take place ten years after the events of Season 1.

New and Returning Cast

The cast for the new season includes several new faces: Asami Kizukawa as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito, and Jun Kunimura as Gōda. Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri are all returning to their roles.

Season 2 follows Toranaga and Blackthorne a decade after they gained power. As Japan continues to recover from civil war, their relationships – both political and personal – become even stronger.

Writing and Directing Teams

The second season welcomes back co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who are joined by a writing team featuring Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente, and Sofie Somoroff.

Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga, who directed episodes in Season 1, are returning to direct. Joining them this season are new directors Anthony Byrne, Kate Herron, and Marks.

Season 1’s Emmy Run

FX’s Shogun swept the 2024 Emmys, winning a record-breaking 18 awards for one season. Hiroyuki Sanada made history as the first Japanese actor to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Anna Sawai was the first actress of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in the same category.

Season 2 continues the story from James Clavell’s epic tale, focusing on Toranaga and Blackthorne as their partnership evolves.

Season 2 of Shogun takes place a decade after the first season and continues the story, based on historical events, of the two men whose lives are deeply connected.
