Shōgun Season 2 Begins Filming With Original Cast—All-New Story Revealed

It has been verified that production for season 2 of “Shōgun” will commence in January, right here in Vancouver. This critically acclaimed drama, available on FX, Hulu, and Disney+, is seeing even more growth after its unprecedented achievement. Adapted from James Clavell’s novel, “Shōgun” became FX’s highest-rated series and took home an impressive 18 Emmy Awards.

Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis Return

Greetings here! It’s me again, stepping into the role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga once more, and this time, I’m thrilled to add ‘Executive Producer’ to my duties. As for our fearless English pilot, John Blackthorne, Cosmo Jarvis will be returning with an even bigger responsibility – he’s been promoted to Co-Executive Producer! Exciting times ahead!

In the initial series, Lord Yoshii Toranaga, portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada, found himself battling for his existence as adversaries within the Council of Regents joined forces against him. The arrival of a puzzling European vessel stranded in a neighboring hamlet revealed its English captain, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who disclosed crucial tactical insights to Toranaga. These revelations significantly shifted the balance of power, ultimately allowing Toranaga to emerge victorious in a war that would shape the course of the next hundred years.

In the second installment, I find myself immersed a decade later, following the same captivating narrative that’s deeply rooted in history. This continuation of the tale revolves around these two extraordinary individuals, each hailing from distinct spheres, whose lives have been irrevocably intertwined.

New Original Storyline from Kondo and Marks

Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have set up a specialized writing team to craft the next phase of this series. Unlike the first season which was based on Clavell’s book, the following season will expand upon its base, developing an entirely new narrative that is loosely based on real historical events.

Kondo, Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Sanada rejoin as executive producers. FX Productions remains at the helm of production for the series.

This version maintains the original structure but uses simpler language to make it more accessible and easier to understand.

Awards and Critical Acclaim

The Shogun television series dominated awards season, clinching the title of Outstanding Drama Series and making history by having Sanada and Anna Sawai win lead acting Emmys – a first for Asian actors in these categories. In addition to this, it also garnered a Golden Globe, SAG, WGA, DGA awards, as well as numerous other accolades.

Production kicks off in January 2026. No premiere date has been announced yet.
