Shōgun Officially Renewed for Season 2: Cosmo Jarvis to Return as John Blackthorne in Emmy-Winning Series? Here’s All We Know

The Shōgun series, known for its critical acclaim and Emmy awards in its first season, has sparked excitement among fans as they eagerly await Season 2. Recent news indicates that Cosmo Jarvis has officially signed a contract to reprise his role alongside the original cast members. This includes actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who had his contract renewed back in May, setting the stage for the show’s continuation with fresh episodes.

Regarding the upcoming season’s storyline, FX has hinted that it will represent a completely fresh and distinct continuation from the first season. Interestingly, this new set of episodes is based on the popular novel by James Clavell, as the network disclosed earlier.

In other words, FX shared that the storyline for the upcoming season follows on from the historically based tale of these two characters hailing from distinct backgrounds, whose destinies have become inescapably linked.

The team behind the series’ creation and scriptwriting have revealed their approach for crafting the new season, which is essentially starting anew since none of Clavell’s other novels share the same characters as Shogun. However, they also disclosed that they relied heavily on the Shogun novel to expand the narrative further.

The next season of the series will start being filmed in Vancouver, where they previously shot the initial season’s scenes, come January.

Before the start of the first season, the head of FX Studios shared his thoughts about whether any scenes from the potential second season would be filmed in Japan.

John Landgraf explained that the complexity arises from the size of the set and the production capacity, with only a small discrepancy between them. He also noted that it has been challenging to align the location and scale suitable for their capabilities with the grandeur desired by the show. Regrettably, he mentioned, the original castles in medieval Japan no longer exist, and even if they did, shooting there would not be feasible.

Further details about Shōgun season 2 will be rolled out by the makers soon.
