Shocking Truth Behind Star Trek’s First Female Enterprise Captain Revealed!

In the series Star Trek: Section 31, viewers were granted an insightful look into the past of a largely overlooked Captain who helmed the Starship Enterprise, a character often overshadowed by famous Captains like Archer, Pike, Kirk, and Picard. While Kirk and Picard are well-known, there were actually two more captains of the Enterprise. One was Captain John Harriman from the Enterprise-B, introduced in Star Trek: Generations. The other, Rachel Garrett, served as captain of the Enterprise-C, a role played by actress Tricia O’Neil on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation titled “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” In Section 31, we encounter a younger version of Garrett portrayed by Kacey Rohl, offering us valuable new details about the first woman to command the Enterprise in the world of Star Trek.

For the very first time, Star Trek enthusiasts met Rachel Garrett in the third season episode of TNG titled “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” It appeared she was around her mid-40s at this point. However, the actress who played her was 45 when filming took place. Through some complex temporal manipulations, we discover that Garrett served as Captain of the Enterprise-C in the year 2344, which is roughly two decades before Picard assumed command of the Enterprise-D. The Enterprise-C was operational for a span of twelve years, though it’s uncertain if Garrett held command throughout its service.

In the year 2344, the starship Enterprise bravely thwarted a Romulan attack on Narendra III Klingon outpost, giving up its crew to safeguard the inhabitants. Although Garrett perished in an alternate timeline in 2367 due to time travel, it was recorded that she died defending the Klingons. This act of valor solidified the Federation-Klingon alliance and averted potential future clashes between erstwhile adversaries. The Klingons hold honor above all else, and such selfless sacrifice by the Federation flagship’s crew was highly esteemed. In Star Trek: Picard season 3, it is revealed that Starfleet constructed a monument to Garrett on M’Talas Prime, which stood proudly in front of the Starfleet Recruitment Center in the 25th century.

In Section 31, Kacey Rohl portrays Lt. Rachel Garrett, a young and talented Starfleet officer, who is around 33 years old but appears younger. This allows for the possibility that Section 31 takes place between 15 to 20 years before her encounter with the Romulans in 2344. In this series, she collaborates with a covert organization on their undercover missions, acting as Starfleet’s representative and ensuring they adhere to the ethical code. Her character is intelligent, ambitious, and valuable to the team. By the end of the movie, her dedication and performance earn her a promotion to Lt. Commander, setting her on a path towards potentially becoming Captain in the future.

It’s unlikely we’ll witness another “Section 31” venture in the near future. However, we might catch Kacey Rohl reprising her role as Rachel Garrett soon. For over a dozen years, her “Enterprise” was the pinnacle of Starfleet. There’s ample opportunity to spin tales within that era. Perhaps it will be a new movie or even an entire series set before “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” As the first female Captain of the “Enterprise” in canon, Captain Garrett is certainly worthy of her own “Star Trek” project. Here’s to hoping that “Section 31” serves as a precursor to this!
