In a tale as old as time, or at least as old as the internet, a major cybersecurity incident has come to light, casting a shadow over the sensitive personal and financial information of a staggering 210,140 Americans. Who knew that clicking “I agree” could lead to such chaos? 🤷♂️
In a recent filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the Georgia-based Harbin Clinic, a healthcare firm that probably thought it was safe, has revealed that an unknown attacker has waltzed right into their database, courtesy of their third-party vendor, Nationwide Recovery Services (NRS). It seems the thief had a shopping list that included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and financial records. Quite the haul, eh? 🛒💰
Harbin Clinic, in its quest to collect debts from those who might have forgotten their wallets at home, relied on NRS. But alas, in July 2024, NRS discovered some suspicious activity—like finding a raccoon in your trash can. This led to a network outage, and after some digging, they found that someone had been playing digital hide-and-seek with their files. 🦝
“It is our understanding that, in July 2024, NRS discovered suspicious activity related to its information technology systems, which resulted in a network outage. NRS indicated that it determined through an investigation that there was unauthorized access to the NRS network between July 5th, 2024 and July 11th, 2024, during which time certain files and folders were illegally copied from NRS’s systems by someone without authorization. NRS reported it [and] began a lengthy review to determine what information was contained on the impacted NRS systems and which NRS clients were impacted.”
As a result of this review, NRS notified Harbin Clinic in February 2025 that information from Harbin Clinic’s patients may have been present on the impacted systems, but it was not yet able to identify which individuals had been impacted.”
Harbin Clinic, a multi-specialty medical group that offers everything from family medicine to cardiology, has taken the noble step of notifying affected customers. They even threw in some free identity monitoring services, because who doesn’t love a little extra surveillance? 📧🔍
So far, Harbin Clinic claims they haven’t detected any misuse of customer data. But they’re urging everyone to keep their eyes peeled and report any suspicious activity. Because, you know, it’s always better to be safe than sorry! 🕵️♂️
