The innovative sci-fi action anime titled “Lazarus” is set to debut this coming April, causing quite a stir among fans. Renowned director Shinichirō Watanabe (famous for “Cowboy Bebop” and “Samurai Champloo”) is helming this project, with production by MAPPA – the animation studio responsible for hits such as “Chainsaw Man” and “Jujutsu Kaisen”. In Japan, it will premiere on TV Tokyo starting April 6 at 11:45 p.m., and can be streamed on multiple platforms.
American fans can tune in a day ahead on April 5th, specifically at midnight Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), to Adult Swim’s Toonami. The episodes will also be accessible on Max the next day.
In the year 2052, the story unfolds during an era of tranquility and abundance, largely due to a remarkable invention called Hapuna. This groundbreaking medicine was created by Dr. Skinner, capable of eradicating illness and alleviating suffering globally.
Three years following its release, Skinner returns with startling revelations: the drug has a brief lifespan, implying that anyone who consumed it will perish in three years. With time rapidly dwindling, a unique squad of five agents, known as Lazarus, is assembled to thwart Skinner and preserve humanity.
In this production, Mamoru Miyano takes on the role of Axel, Makoto Furukawa portrays Doug, and Maaya Uchida plays Christine. The voice cast also includes additional talented individuals. The soundtrack is particularly noteworthy as Kamasi Washington performs the opening theme ‘Vortex,’ and The Boo Radleys handle the ending theme ‘Lazarus.’
In this project, Watanabe (the lead director) has partnered with Chad Stahelski, famously known for his work on the movie “John Wick”, to handle the action-packed scenes. The series additionally boasts a talented team including character designer Akemi Hayashi, art director Miho Sugiura, and cinematographer Takuma Sakamoto.
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but feel the excitement building up for the upcoming anime, “Lazarus”. Its captivating action sequences, enchanting music, and top-notch talent are making it one of the most eagerly awaited series of the year. With a total of 13 episodes, I can hardly wait to be glued to my seat, biting my nails as the story unfolds.
