Who’s Behind It
Godzilla Resurgence was helmed by directors Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Shin Ultraman). The screenplay was penned by Anno, while the visual effects were orchestrated by Higuchi. The principal actors in this film are Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara.
The Impact of Shin Godzilla
This is the first Godzilla movie made by Toho since “Godzilla: Final Wars” in 2004. Upon its debut, “Shin Godzilla” turned into a significant cultural phenomenon in Japan, bagging seven Japan Academy Prizes, such as Best Picture and Best Director. It generated $79 million globally and held the title of the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film until “Godzilla Minus One” outperformed it.
Gkids Brings It to a New Generation
This is the initial Godzilla release by Gkids since Toho acquired U.S. rights in 2024. David Jesteadt, president of Gkids, commended Shin Godzilla as a contemporary masterpiece, emphasizing its tale of bureaucratic chaos and intense action as particularly pertinent. Previously, Gkids distributed Anno’s Love and Pop and have been expanding their collection of Japanese live-action movies.
Jesteadt stated that Shin Godzilla, with its remarkably relevant tale about individuals joining forces to prevent impending doom, featuring some of the most thrilling action sequences the series has offered, is a contemporary masterpiece. We are privileged to assist in re-releasing this film for American viewers, making it even better than before.
Toho Weighs In
Keiji Ota, the representative from Toho on Godzilla matters, considered the movie a “cultural sensation” that rejuvenated the series. He pointed out that numerous American viewers will be watching Shin Godzilla in cinemas for the first time, and he expressed that there’s no superior way to enjoy it on the big screen.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m excited to announce that “Shin Godzilla” is making its grand return to North American theaters! Since the release of “Godzilla: Final Wars” in 2004, this is the first Japanese-produced Godzilla film we’ve had. In Japan, it created quite a stir and played an essential part in rejuvenating the iconic franchise after a 12-year gap. If you haven’t seen it yet, this is your chance to immerse yourself in the raw, intense experience that only a theater can provide when confronted with the colossal presence, unparalleled power, and heart-pounding terror of Godzilla. So, grab your popcorn, find a comfortable seat, and enjoy the film!
