The company behind Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Stellar Blade, known as Shift Up, has unveiled information regarding their upcoming game that was once referred to as Project Witches. This game is now being called Project Spirits, and it’s expected to be a game set within an “Eastern Fantasy” theme that caters to various platforms and cultures.
The term ‘subculture’ is frequently employed by Korean developers to refer to what Chinese studios label as ‘ACGN’ and what Japanese developers call ‘anime’ or ‘otaku’. To make it clear, we’re talking about a game with an anime-like style. Previously, Shift Up categorized its popular gacha game Nikke as a subculture title. It’s not certain whether Project Spirits will incorporate gacha mechanics, but given Shift Up’s achievements in that area, it’s something that can’t be ruled out.
The initial artwork unveiled for the game features two women adorned in vibrant traditional outfits, suggesting an enhanced version of their attire, standing before a temple with a pagoda design. This art style bears a striking resemblance to Shift Up’s Destiny Child, another gacha game.
[Project Spirits] has been introduced as Shift Up’s leading venture, an innovative multi-platform game that embodies the idea of ‘Eastern Fantasy.’ As a fresh intellectual property succeeding ‘Stellar Blade’ and Nikke, it is being developed into a high-quality game within the industry, leveraging Shift Up’s past successes in creating IP as demonstrated through previous projects,” according to the official website.
Alongside unveiling the project, Shift Up posted various job opportunities related to the game; they’re on the hunt for professionals ranging from artists, designers, to writers. Notably, Shift Up prefers individuals with experience in anime-style games, but they’re also interested in those proficient with Unreal Engine 5. Furthermore, the studio requires talent capable of designing dungeons and open-world landscapes.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Shift Up has unveiled plans for a sequel to the iconic Stellar Blade series, which is expected to hit shelves before 2027! This exciting news comes straight from their latest financial report. Additionally, in the same document, they hinted at Project Spirits aiming for a launch within the same timeframe. However, before diving into the mystical world of Project Spirits, Stellar Blade is set to make its triumphant return on PC, rekindling its success and restoring some energy to Shift Up amidst the recent Nikke-related upheavals.
