Shibarium’s Snail’s Pace: Is Your Shiba Inu Really Just a Couch Potato? đ˘đ¤
After years of sitting around looking eagerly at the calendar, Shiba Inuâs Layer-2 (L2) solution, Shibarium, finally decided to launch on August 16, 2023. It was supposed to be the Ferrari of the blockchain worldâfast, shiny, and with fewer costs. Instead, itâs more like a tricycle thatâs lost its pedals. Data shows that Shibariumâs daily activity is about as lively as a sleepy sloth on a sunny afternoon, especially when compared to its more energetic colleagues like Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism. đśââď¸đŚĽ
This little essay is all about how Shibarium has been bouncing along this year and what its snail-paced development means for the broader Shiba Inu universe, particularly for BONE, the token that attempts to be the backbone of Shibarium, and of course, SHIB itselfâbecause who doesnât love a meme coin thatâs more meme than coin? đ¤Ł
Shibariumâs User Engagement Falters After Meme Market Rally
According to the trusty Shibariumscan, Shiba Inuâs L2 network had an introduction that can only be described as, well, unimpressive. In the first quarter of 2025âwait, 2025? Yes, time itself seems confusedâdaily active addresses were as scarce as henâs teeth. Little to report on the user engagement front. đŚ
Then, out of nowhere, around April, activity suddenly picked upâprobably because of what some might call âthe meme coin mania,â which is basically a bunch of internet jokers thinking theyâre investment geniuses. đ¤łđĽ
Between April 10 and May 10, the meme coin market cap exploded by 56%, because who doesnât love chasing the next big memeâpreferably with your rent money? Riding that meme tidal wave, Shibarium hit a peak of over 21,000 daily active addresses on May 12, doing its best impression of a rising star. Sadly, like all good stories, this surge was short-lived. đ§ď¸
By late May, the meme bubble burstâprobably with a loud popâand by June 5, daily activity had plummeted to around 9,000. Thatâs a 55% decline faster than you can say âHODL.â
Why Is Shibarium Falling Behind Other L2 Networks? Probably Not Because Itâs a Poodle
This oscillation of activity hints that Shibarium might be suffering from a chronic case of âwhatâs the point?ââa scarcity of compelling use cases that keep users logged in longer than it takes to refresh your meme feed. đ´
In an exclusive chat with BeInCrypto, Dominick John, an analyst at Kronos Research, noted that while Shibarium has âbursts of community-driven activityââwhich sounds like a polite way of saying âsporadic chaosââitâs still trailing behind its more mature peers like Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism. đĽą
âThose networks boast ecosystems and composability in DeFiâthink of it as a well-oiled machineâwhile Shibarium remains more like a pedal-less tricycle. To truly stand out, it needs to develop a DeFi ecosystem that delivers some long-term value, not just short-term meme magic,â John explained.
He further notes that Shibariumâs sluggish growth âreflects project-specific hurdles, limited dApp adoption, ecosystem fragmentation, and the fierce competition among Layer-2sâmore than meme-token fatigue, unfortunately.â
On-chain data from DefiLlama shows the stark contrast: Shibarium has only 18 DeFi projects attempting to find their footing, versus Baseâs 549 and Arbitrumâs 741âmore than enough to make you feel like youâre missing out on some blockchain buffet. đ˝ď¸
Lynn C., SONEXâs CMO, echoes that sentiment. She admits that meme-token fatigue is a factor but insists the bigger challenge is how the network is scaled and structuredâbasically, itâs like trying to build a skyscraper with LEGO bricks. Different projects have different strategies, and none of them have a magic wand. đŞ
âWhile meme fatigue might slow down growth, much depends on how the network scales. Thereâs no one-size-fits-allâdifferent paths, different pitfalls,â she explained.
Despite all this, Shibarium has brought some utility goodies to the Shiba Inu ecosystemâcheaper transactions, SHIB burns, and giving BONE more than just a catchy name. Itâs like giving a hamster a tiny treadmillâuseful, but itâs still a hamster. đš
John states, âShibarium has bolstered the ecosystem by lowering transaction costs, supporting SHIB burns, and giving BONE some needed utility.â
For Lynn, the network âadds an important piece to the puzzle, promising to scale transactions and cut costsâimportant goals, if you want to keep the lights on.â
BONE Token: The Dog that Didnât Bark Much đśđť
BONE, the primary gas token, is supposed to be the engine that powers transactions on Shibarium. But with fewer transactions happening, BONEâs market performance has been as dismal as a rainy Sunday, dropping 38% this year. đ§ď¸
John comments that âutility needs to translate into demand and on-chain activity. BONE has some early use cases but still needs to convince the world itâs more than a speculative frenzy.â
Lynn remains cautiously optimistic, saying, âBONE still has room to grow, especially as the ecosystem matures and more real utility is developedâafter all, most new tokens are shy at first.â
As for SHIBâthe meme coin darlingâthe slow pace of Shibariumâs growth raises concerns about its future utility, burn rates, and the overall mojo of the token. đđĽ
âIf Shibarium doesnât pick up speed, SHIB might face reduced utility, lower burn rates, and a stagnant valueâa whole lotta nothing,â John warns.
Lynn, slightly more optimistic, notes that, âA slowdown might temper overall excitement, but itâs not the end of the world. These projects often evolve significantly over time, especially when the team stops loafing.â đĄ
