‘She’s Going To Crush It’: Margot Robbie On Lady Gaga Reprising Her Harley Quinn Role In Joker Sequel

As a die-hard fan of all things DC and Harley Quinn, I must say that Margot Robbie has truly captured my heart with her electrifying portrayal of the iconic character. Yet, the thought of Lady Gaga stepping into those high heels and red wig fills me with equal parts excitement and trepidation!

As a dedicated follower, I can’t help but express my admiration for Margot Robbie’s spellbinding portrayal of Harley Quinn, our beloved DC antiheroine, in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). Yet, the Joker: Folie à Deux film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips, brought Lady Gaga into the iconic role.

In a previous interview with Variety at the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet, the Barbie actress reacted to the Poker Face singer reprising one of her famous roles. “Oh my God, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding? She’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see it,” she said at the time.

When inquired about discussing their mutual character with Lady Gaga, Robbie stated that they haven’t had the opportunity to converse on the topic yet. “I haven’t actually talked to her about it,” the actress from The Wolf of Wall Street explained. She further mentioned that she prefers to remain uninformed so she can enjoy the surprise when she eventually watches the movie, adding her thoughts on Gaga reprising her role in another interview with MTV News in October 2022.

She expressed her delight at seeing other actresses portray their unique takes on the character in movies. Robbie stated that she had always hoped Harley Quinn would become one of those iconic characters, such as Batman or Macbeth, which are often played by different actors over time. At the given moment, she mentioned how it was an honor to establish a strong foundation for the character so that other performers could have their turn playing her. Furthermore, she believed Lady Gaga would be amazing in the role.

The follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster movie “Joker” premiered in theaters on October 4, but it had a disappointing opening weekend. Yet, Joaquin Phoenix’s performances have been praised and admired by critics. Continuing from where the first film ended, this sequel delved into Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), aka Joker’s, court trials following his alleged crimes.

Inside Arkham Asylum, the troubled antagonist, formerly known as Arthur Fleck, encounters Harley Quinn and their bond deepens into an intense romantic obsession. The official synopsis describes this relationship as follows: “While grappling with his conflicting personas, aspiring comedian Arthur Fleck finds true love in Harley Quinn, within the walls of Arkham State Hospital.

Joker: Folie à Deux is running in theaters now.
