She’s Back: Gina Carano Provides Followers with an Update Related to her Disney Lawsuit

As a long-time fan of The Mandalorian and Gina Carano‘s portrayal of Cara Dune, I have to say that this whole situation has been quite frustrating to watch unfold. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion – you know it’s going to happen, but you can’t look away.

It’s been some time since we received updates about Gina Carano’s personal life and legal dispute with Disney… it seems those two topics might be intertwined. To remind you, the ex-MMA fighter-turned-actress was dismissed by Disney following her controversial and disrespectful social media posts that were seen as offensive to the LGBTQ+ community, a stance that Disney could not and should not condone.

Gina Carano’s contract wasn’t extended, and she responded by equating herself to a Holocaust survivor, stating she was being “oppressed,” when in reality, she was exhibiting intolerance. However, Carano took legal action against Disney, seeking $75,000 in compensation and a court order compelling Disney to re-employ her.

For some time now, we’ve been keeping tabs on a soap opera-like situation, and although it seemed as if things had simmered down due to our lack of recent updates, rest assured, things are far from quiet. Gina Carano recently shared that her case will indeed be heading to trial towards the end of next year.

In summary, Gina Carano was chosen to play Cara Dune in the series The Mandalorian. Her character was well-received by fans due to the role being suited to Carano’s acting skills and the way the character was written. However, Carano caused controversy with her political and offensive social media posts, leading Disney to terminate her contract. This decision upset Carano, who has since filed a lawsuit seeking $75,000 in damages and wanting her old job back.

For several weeks and months, Carano has been consistently providing updates about her situation, even though it’s unclear how many people genuinely cared for the details. Additionally, her frequent, sometimes offensive comparisons to celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson or Mark Hamill, which seemed irrelevant in light of her case, were not well-received. Ultimately, it became clear that Carano’s controversial conservative views and support for Donald Trump were at the heart of the issue, validating Disney’s decision not to renew her contract as it appears she holds bigoted beliefs.

But, recently, after a longer calm, Carano posted an update on her case against Disney on X:

After the Judge refused to throw out my case in Disney’s favor, they asked for permission to take the decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals right away and halt all discovery process during this appeal. Yesterday, October 16th, 2024, we found out that…

In a somewhat theatrical manner, Carano indicated that the legal proceedings would indeed commence in September 2025 and that Disney’s motion to halt discovery and the trial had been rejected. This was anticipated, but the question remains: what is it exactly that Carano seeks? She persistently states that it’s not about the money (and indeed, $75,000 appears to be a relatively minor amount compared to Disney’s resources), but rather she desires her reinstatement by Disney. However, it’s unclear how this could be achieved based on the current situation.

As a gamer, I’ve learned that when a game doesn’t renew my contract for the next season, it doesn’t mean they’re forcing me to play another game. Similarly, just because a company didn’t renew an employee’s contract, it’s unlikely a court could compel them to rehire her. Moreover, it seems unrealistic that a court would dictate the terms of her return if such a scenario were possible. To quote a Forbes article, “It’s like expecting a game to let you play again on your own terms after you’ve been benched.

What are the rules for something like that? Could they hire her back and have her fall into a Sarlaac pit in the first few minutes of her appearance? Would she mandate her amount of screentime via the injunction? That seems almost impossible to consider. And it’s not even clear that The Mandalorian is coming back for another season after the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu theatrical movie. Could she force them to put her in that? This part of this whole thing still seems like the biggest reach. Damages would seem more likely, if she did win.

As a devoted fan, I share your sentiments. If Carano wins her case, she’ll receive the damages she sought, but I find it hard to imagine a scenario where the court compels Disney to adjust their screenplays and storylines to suit Cara Dune’s preferences, particularly if “The Mandalorian” fails to secure a fourth season, which seems plausible. And when, as we anticipate, it becomes clear that this was merely about financial disputes. It’s disappointing.
