She-Hulk Star Tatiana Maslany Responds to Marvel Fans’ Sexism and Her Old Bob Iger Comments

As a passionate fan and admirer of Tatiana Maslany‘s incredible talent, I wholeheartedly stand by her and the groundbreaking series she brought to life – She-Hulk. It was a breath of fresh air, blending social satire with superhero action, and introducing us to a character that deserves more screen time than she got.

Although she has other notable roles to her credit, undeniably, the character of She-Hulk is the one that has brought actress Tatiana Maslany the most fame in her career. The series received critical acclaim, even if it had its ups and downs; overall, it was a well-received show, and it certainly didn’t deserve all the negative attention it received.

In essence, it’s clear that most of the disdain stems from a discomfort with female protagonists, and a perception that the show promotes feminism and women’s empowerment. Regrettably, this attitude is problematic, causing distress not only for the show but also for those associated with it.

These individuals aren’t merely admirers; they harbor prejudiced and misogynistic views, and their unacceptable online actions warrant strong criticism. In a recent conversation, Maslany addressed the sexism she encountered during She-Hulk, as well as her past Bob Iger comments that could have impacted her role in the MCU moving forward.

The She-Hulk series was incredibly engaging, blending elements of social and political satire with traditional superhero themes. It skillfully upheld core ideals and values, and its portrayal of the character was long overdue. Despite some over-the-top moments that were perhaps excessive, the show was generally humorous and captivating. Notably, it made clever use of self-irony in a tasteful manner, enriching the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) along the way by introducing a character whose on-screen presence was well-deserved.

As a passionate fan, it’s disappointing to see how some individuals, who perhaps shouldn’t even be considered fans, have taken to trashing a show online simply because they don’t agree with its female lead and label it as ‘woke’. This behavior, unfortunately, mirrors the hypocrisy we’ve seen in the past among certain fans towards characters like Deadpool. While fans adore Deadpool, they seem to criticize shows with female leads, like She-Hulk, which is a form of sexism that should not be tolerated. The unfortunate incident involving Maslany was also partly fueled by this hypocrisy.

In a recent talk with the Independent, she commented on that:

It’s quite intriguing… or should I say amusing, right? What makes it enjoyable is that Jessica Gao, the series creator, anticipated that we would face trolling. When we started receiving similar reactions that she had intentionally included in the script, it seemed like we were just playing along with her creative plan.

It’s never enjoyable to be belittled, and it’s particularly disheartening when the insults come because of one’s gender. However, Tatiana Maslany demonstrated great courage by not shying away from criticizing her former boss, Disney CEO Bob Iger, labeling him “out of touch” following his remarks that the union demands during the SAG-AFTRA strike were “unrealistic.” Here’s what she has to say about that moment today:

In those instances, you become quite passionate. Expressing your thoughts as intended can be challenging when you’re standing alongside others during a protest or demonstration.

These remarks could potentially determine if there’s a second season for “She-Hulk,” though it’s uncertain if Disney might harbor resentment towards the actress in reality.
