As a dedicated fan of Game of Thrones who has followed the series since its inception, I must say that I share Natalie Dormer’s disappointment with how Margaery Tyrell’s character was written off the show. While I understand that the brutal death scene provided some sense of justice for her character, I can’t help but feel that it could have been more fitting and less tragic, considering all that she had been through.
Actress Natalie Dormer, known for portraying Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones, has shared her dissatisfaction about how her character met her end on the series. During a chat with Collider Ladies Night, she voiced her discontent regarding the death scene of her character.
In his words, he expressed feeling disappointed when she chose a different path. He yearned for more interaction but at that particular instance, she seemed upset due to her character’s feelings towards Jonathan Pryce, which confirmed he was on the right track with the performance.
In Season 6’s episode titled “The Winds of Winter,” Margaery Tyrell meets her end. This particular episode witnesses Cersei Lannister setting off wildfire within the Great Sept of Baelor. The blast instantaneously claims the lives of Margaery and numerous others trapped inside. Despite foreseeing the peril, Margaery heroically tried to alert everyone to evacuate.
Dormer stated that, while Margaery’s death was brutal, the character’s actions provided some sense of justice. Dormer said she was vindicated in the end—it’s a couple of sentences, but it’s all that needs to be said. She had been vindicated, and at that moment, she felt free to let her go.
A large number of fans felt let down by Margaery’s demise, as they thought her character, who had endured much hardship, merited a more favorable conclusion. Previously, Dormer expressed her preference for a different way Margaery could have departed the series.
In a different wording, Emilia Clarke (Dormer) shared with GamesRadar+ her preference for how Margaery Tyrell might have perished: “If she had to pass away, I’d want it to be at the hands of a dragon, wouldn’t that be fitting? But then again, that would imply Daenerys overcoming certain obstacles, so who knows?” Despite Emilia Clarke’s creative ideas for a dragon-induced death, Margaery Tyrell came close to meeting her fiery end in a manner consistent with the dramatic flair she had imagined.
Margaery Tyrell, portrayed by Natalie Dormer, was the child of Lord Mace Tyrell and Lady Alerie Tyrell, as well as the granddaughter of Lady Olenna Tyrell. She became Queen Consort when she married King Joffrey Baratheon, and later his brother, King Tommen Baratheon. However, her fate took a turn for the worse due to accusations of lying in court and pretending to support the Sparrow movement, which eventually led to her sad demise.
At the trial of Cersei and Loras Tyrell within the Grand Hall of Baelor, Margaery finds herself standing beside her father. Upon noticing the absence of Cersei and King Tommen, she makes an effort to lead a swift exit from the Great Sept, with her brother Loras by her side.
Margaery’s failed escape attempt ends tragically as the citadel is consumed by a wildfire, claiming the lives of all within. This event ultimately leads to Tommen’s suicide and Cersei’s rise to power on the Iron Throne. Since there was no longer anyone from House Tyrell to forge an alliance with House Lannister, Margaery’s grandmother Olenna Tyrell decides to align Highgarden with Daenerys Targaryen instead.
